The Wright State women's basketball team will open the 2018 regular season on Tuesday night at CSU Bakersfield, and will round out their West Coast trip Friday as they face off against UNLV.
Raider Round-Up
After a convincing victory in their exhibition over Marian University last week, the Raiders are excited to get the regular season started on Tuesday in California. This year's Wright State offense looks to be very up-tempo in head coach Katrina Merriweather's third season at the helm. Senior Emily Vogelpohl is poised to lead the Raiders in her senior campaign, returning her 10.8 points per game and 2.5 steals per contest. Junior Makcenzie Taylor will look to help the Raiders replace the 20.6 points per game lost when Chelsea Welch graduated after last season. She will look to add on to her 11.2 points she averaged a season ago, and newcomers Michal Miller, Imani Partlow, and Angel Baker will look to make immediate impacts in their first seasons as Raiders.
Scouting CSU Bakersfield
The Roadrunners will welcome the Raiders to the Icardo Center for the first ever meeting between the two programs to kick off both teams' seasons. Bakersfield will look to build off last year's 18-14, 10-4 WAC season that featured a run at both the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament finals title. CSUB boasts 10 returnees and six newcomers, including preseason All-WAC honorees Alexxus Gilbert, JJ Johnson, and Vanessa Austin. With this trio back to lead a veteran group, head coach Greg McCall should be pleased with the dynamics of his team heading into a new season.
Scouting UNLV
Lady Rebels head coach Kathy Oliver will be fielding her deepest and most experienced squad in her 11 years at the helm of the Scarlet and Gray. Four senior starters return for UNLV this year, highlighted by senior center Katie Powell, who was also selected to the preseason All-Mountain West team, the first Lady Rebel with preseason league honors since 2011-12. Powell, who averaged 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Lady Rebels as a junior, is also a Lisa Leslie Award Watch List member, which honors the top center in the nation. The Lady Rebels were picked to finish second in the Mountain West this season behind Boise State, and are sure to be ready to open the regular season when they welcome the Raiders to Cox Pavilion on Friday night.
Coverage
Tuesday's game can be seen live on ESPN3, while Friday's game will be carried by the Mountain West Digital Network.
