The Wright State men's soccer team, ranked #18 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week and the regular-season Horizon League Champions, will host the semi-finals and finals of the conference tournament this weekend at WSU's Alumni Field. The Raiders will play Milwaukee Thursday at 4 pm followed by UIC vs. IUPUI at 7 pm. The championship game will be played Saturday at 6 pm. All games will be shown on ESPN+.
Scouting the Raiders
Wright State collected many all-conference honors this past week. Senior Dan Bent was named the Defensive Player of the Year and junior Joel Sundell was selected as the Goalie of the Year. WSU's first year head coach Jake Slemker recieved the Coach of the Year honor.
Behind his team-leading 11 goals and 28 points, Alec Philippe was named to the All-Horizon League First Team. Joining him for that honor is Raiders assist leader Jackson Dietrich, who finished the regular season with 11 assists. Dan Bent and Joel Sundell were also honored as First Team All-Horizon League players.
With 10 and 9 goals respectively, Stefan Rokvic and Deri Corfe were named to the All-Horizon League Second Team. After only trailing Corfe in minutes played among freshmen for Wright State, Simar Perez was named to the All-Freshmen Team.
WSU defeated Milwaukee to end the regular season on Friday by a score of 4-0 at Alumni Field.
Scouting the Panthers
Milwaukee advanced to the semi-finals match by upsetting Oakland 1-0 Monday night. The Panthers are now 9-7-2.
The Panthers had four honored this week by the league coaches. Leading the way was Sean Reynolds making a repeat appearance as a member of the All-Horizon League First-Team. He becomes the first Panther to earn back-to-back spots on the first team since Laurie Bell in 2013 and 2014.
Evan Conway was also honored, claiming a spot on the All-Horizon League Second-Team. Shawn Azcueta and Andreas Soerensen rounded out the list with appearances on the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.
If They Win
With a victory, the Raiders will advance to play in the championship game Saturday at 6 pm against the winner of the UIC/IUPUI game. It will be the Raiders second championship appearance in the last three years at home. WSU fell to UIC in 2016's final.
