Wright State
The Raiders, 1-0, opened the season with a 96-73 win against Western Carolina at home Wednesday night. Bill Wampler, a junior transfer from Drake, led the way with 26 points on five three points. Sophomore Loudon Love, a preseason first teamer, collected 17 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes while Kentucky native Skyelar Potter finished with 16 points. Freshman Malachi Smith came off the bench for 10 points. Wright State shot 55% from the field and 46% from three-point range while outrebounding the Catamounts 37-34.
The teams have faced off five previous times with the Raiders winning four times. MSU served the Raiders only one of its two home losses last year as WSU fell 80-61 on Nov. 18 at the WSU Nutter Center.
Wright State was picked by many to win the Horizon League with Love on the preseason first team and Mark Hughes named to the second team. The Raiders won the conference tournament title last March and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 under head coach Scott Nagy, who is currently in his third season at WSU.
Interesting Note
There are 64 NCAA D-I games on the Saturday schedule and the Wright State at Murray State clash is only one of two matchups that involve two NCAA Tournament participants from last March. The other is Texas Southern vs Gonzaga.Â
Murray State
The Racers open the 2018-19 campaign tonight against the Raiders after winning an exhibition game against Brescia 99-61 Monday night. The Racers put 11 players in the scoring column led by Ja Morant with 17 points. Tevin Brown and Shaq Buchanan each tossed in 15 and Brion Whitley scored 13. Anthony Smith, Brion Whitley and Darnell Cowart all grabbed six rebounds. The Racers also shared the ball in recording 28 assists on their 42 field goals and they scored 64 points in the paint to go with 32 points on fast breaks.
Murray State went 26-6 and 16-2 in the Ohio Valley to advance to play West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, losing 85-68. The Racers were picked to finish second in the OVC this year, behind favorite Belmont.
