@WSU_SB Advances with Win

In a game that was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wright State softball team opened up the Horizon League Tournament with a 4-0 first-round victory over Northern Kentucky in Chicago Wednesday afternoon.

The Raiders struggled at the plate throughout the game, but in the sixth inning, they picked up the hits they needed to prevail. Honnah Susor had two hits on the day, kicking off the sixth inning with a double that resulted with her ending up on third base due to a fielding error by the Norse. But, it was Macey Gunther and Madison Mills that were found their first hits of the game with s pair of two-run home runs, driving in all four runs for the Raiders. Ashley Sharp was in the circle for the Raiders, putting together an outstanding performance. The Horizon League Pitcher of the Year shut down the Norse by pitching a complete game while only allowing three hits and no runs.

"That was a great pitching performance by Ashley, but the key for us was playing good defense," Wright State head coach Laura Matthews said. "Now, we are going to rest up for tomorrow and the grind of the conference tournament."

With the win, the Raiders will play tomorrow at 1:00 pm eastern, taking on the tournament hosts and number one seed UIC Flames. The Flames have an overall record of 30-18, and went 19-4 in Horizon League play. The Raiders won one of three games at UIC earlier in the season.
