Jumping its record to 8-3, the Wright State volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 win over Cornell Saturday morning in the second day of the Crusader Classic in Valparaiso, IN by scores of 25-11, 24-26, 25-23, 17-25, 15-10. WSU is now 8-3.
Double-figure kill days by
Alannah Lemming and
Celia Powers with 14 each plus
Teddie Sauer with 11 paced the attack as
Lainey Stephenson pinned 43 assists with 14 digs.Â
Jenna Story ended with 22 digs, and
Taylor Gibson posted four service aces of the 11 total by the Raiders.
First Set
The Raiders took control early with a 5-0 lead and never looked back with leads of 15-6 and 21-7 to pick up the win 25-11. Powers and Sauer each had three kills as Gibson posted three of her aces to go with Sauer's two. Lemming and Stephenson each had two blocks.
Second Set
This set was tougher with the widest lead coming when WSU was up 17-15 until Cornell posted the win 26-24. Lemming collected seven kills as she hit .778 in the set along with two more blocks. WSU hit .206.
Third Set
Though Cornell jumped to a 7-4 lead, the Raiders managed to creep back and take leads of 14-10 and 22-20 before sealing the 25-23 win. Gibson, Powers and Sauer each had three kills while Stephenson had 10 assists.
Fourth Set
It started as a tight set until Cornell jumped out to a 22-13 lead and cruised to the final 25-17.Â
Natalie Santana and Lemming each had three kills. Powers added six digs, and Stephenson ended with eight assists and five digs.
Fifth Set
WSU took control 4-0 early, leading 13-8 before taking home the win 15-10. Powers led the way with four kills as Lemming added three with Stephenson's seven assists.
