Wright State picked first in Horizon League preseason poll
10/17/2019 12:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
After its first outright regular season title in program history and winning the Horizon League Championship last season, the Wright State women's basketball team received 91 total points and four first-place votes as the Raiders were selected to finish tied for first in the 2019-20 Horizon League preseason poll, announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.
Individually, senior Michal Miller was named first team All-Conference and sophomore Angel Baker was selected to the second team.
Along with winning their first outright conference title in program history last season, the Raiders' 27 wins were the most in program history as head coach Katrina Merriweather claimed Horizon League Coach of the Year honors for the second time in three seasons. Their 16 Horizon League victories were also the most conference wins in team history. Wright State advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, earning a No. 13 seed and a trip to face Texas A&M in the opening round.
Last season, Miller turned in the eighth-highest single season three-point percentage in program history, connecting on 30.5 percent of her shots, while finishing the year averaging 11.6 points per game. Her 395 total points was three shy of the team lead to end the year and was the fourth-most total points scored during a junior season in program history.
Baker, who was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman team last season, was the Raiders' third-leading scorer a year ago with a 9.6 points per game average. Her 325 points now ranks as the ninth-highest scoring total during a freshman campaign in program history. Baker scored in double-figures nine times last season, including a Wright State-high 27 points against Youngstown State on January 18 and a 22-point performance in the Raiders' NCAA Tournament game against Texas A&M.
Wright State tunes up for the 2019-2020 campaign with an exhibition contest against Kentucky State on November 6 inside the Nutter Center before opening the regular season with a pair of home contests against Abilene Christian (Nov. 15) and Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 19). The Raiders begin Horizon League play on the road before ringing in the new year with league matchups against Cleveland State (Jan. 2) and Youngstown State (Jan. 4) to start 2020.
