The Raiders fall to reigning HL Champion Green Bay

After winning the opening set, the Wright State volleyball team dropped the next three sets and fell 3-1 on the road Friday night at defending Horizon League champion Green Bay. The Raiders now have a quick turnaround as they make the trip to take on Milwaukee at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Friday night's loss dropped Wright State to 16-3 overall and 5-2 in Horizon League play, while Green Bay improves to 13-6 overall and is now also 5-2 in conference action. The Raiders have now lost their last two matches while the Phoenix have now won three in a row.

The Raiders recorded 85 digs, 43 kills, 12 blocks and nine aces in the four-set match Friday night, with Lainey Stephenson tallying a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs. Celia Powers also tallied a double-double, knocking down 12 kills and collecting 15 digs. Teddie Sauer was the next Raider with double-digit kills as she powered down 10. Megan Alders and Taylor Gibson added seven kills each. Jenna Story finished with a match-high 27 digs as she continues to lead the league, averaging 6.93 digs per set.

Set 1
The Raiders started the set with a six-point run to take the lead over Green Bay. During that run Alders racked up three aces. The Phoenix were down by five at 7-2, but managed a three-point run to shorten their deficit. Sauer added back-to-back kills to put the Raiders ahead at 13-8 before Green Bay fought back with a six-point run to tie the score at 14-14. Sauer and Alders each answered with a kill to put the Raiders up by two points. Wright State reached the red zone as the Phoenix's offense struggled. Gibson knocked down a kill to push the Raiders set point and a kill from Powers finished the set 25-18 in favor of Wright State.
 
Set 2
The points went back and forth between the two teams to start the second set. Green Bay led at 8-4 but Sauer answered with a kill and two aces to shorten the Raider deficit to one point. The Raiders were unable to catch up to Green Bay as the Phoenix reached 15 points and by five. Wright State attempted to fight back but was unable to stop Green Bay's offense. The Raiders trailed by nine points as Green Bay reached the red zone. The Phoenix reached set point but a kill from Powers postponed their victory for one point before Green Bay knocked down a kill to win the set 25-16.
 
Set 3

Green Bay opened the set leading the Raiders 5-3 until Powers and Stephenson answered with a kill each to tie the score. Wright State went on a four-point run to take the lead from Green Bay at 8-7. The points went back and forth as each team fought to take the lead. The Phoenix took back the lead after a four-point run to make the score 14-11. Gibson knocked down a kill to give the Raiders 15 points. Down by four points at 19-15, the Raiders were able to go on a run of points to make the score 21-18 and trailed by three points in the red zone. After a long rally back and forth the Phoenix reached set point at 24-19. Stephenson served up an ace to give Wright State point 20. Powers added a kill for another Wright State point, but Green Bay answered with a kill to end the set 25-21.
 
Set 4
The Raiders opened the set with a kill by Alders and a big block from Powers to take an early lead, but the Phoenix did not back down and went on a four-point run. Sauer knocked down a kill to make the score 7-6 before Gibson and Powers each added a kill to give the Raiders the lead at 9-7. The Raiders struggled to put the ball in Green Bay's court as the Phoenix took the lead 12-9. Green Bay's offense was hard to stop as they held a strong lead. The Raiders trailed by 10 points when the Phoenix reached the red zone. Powers knocked down the last kill for Wright State as they reached 15 points. The Phoenix answered with a kill for match point and went on to win 25-15.
