Late three drops Raiders on Saturday night

Visiting Kent State held the lead for only 2:52 on Saturday night, but it was a three-pointer with under 10 seconds remaining that handed the Wright State men's basketball team a 72-71 loss inside the Nutter Center.

Kent State's Danny Pippen hit a contested three from the corner in front of his bench as the clock ticked under 10 seconds to play to give the visitors their one-point advantage. Cole Gentry drove the length of the court for Wright State before the ball was deflected out of bounds, setting up an inbounds pass and a midrange jumper from Bill Wampler that bounced away as the final horn sounded.

Wright State (3-1) led by as many as 16 points, growing its lead to 40-24 with 2:14 remaining in the first half before Kent State (3-0) narrowed the gap to 10 points at the intermission. In the second half, the Raiders held on to an advantage between five and 10 points throughout before Kent State pulled to within four at 68-64 with 1:29 remaining. The teams traded buckets before a Troy Simons three pulled Kent State within one point. Jaylon Hall hit one of two free throws with 23 seconds left to stake Wright State to a two-point lead and set up the closing moments.

Wampler finished with a game-high 18 points for the Raiders, who also saw Hall finish in double figures with a 15-point scoring night of his own. Trey Calvin tallied nine points, while Gentry and Loudon Love each added eight points.

Kent State saw five players finish with 10-plus points – led by Antonio Williams' 18. Tervell Beck was the only other player to score for the Golden Flash, tallying five points.

For the night, Wright State finished shooting 41.9 percent from the floor (26-of-62) and Kent State connected 45.5 percent clip (25-of-55) as both teams hit eight three-point attempts. The Raiders were outrebounded, 38-34, while the points in the paint (30-28 Kent State) and points off turnover (15-14 Kent State) battles were nearly even.

Wright State remains at home on Wednesday night, hosting Urbana in a 7 p.m. tipoff in a campus site game as part of the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Raiders will then hit the road for three games in Estero, Florida at the Gulf Coast Showcase.
