For the first time in program history, the Wright State men's soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division I Championship as the Raiders defeated the Milwaukee Panthers 4-3 in penalty kicks to claim the 2019 Horizon League championship on Saturday night.
Monday afternoon (November 18) the Raiders will find out where and who they will be playing in the NCAA Championship.
Deri Corfe got the Raiders on the board first Saturday night, breaking a 28-minute scoreless drought when he fired in a shot from beyond the box for the first goal of the contest and his 13th of the season. The Raiders remained in control for the rest of the first half. Just five minutes into the second half, Milwaukee's Paolo Gratton connected on a pass from Evan Conway to tie the contest at one all.
Though both teams battled through 90 minutes, that wasn't enough as the Horizon League Championship headed into golden goal overtime. Two overtime periods also were unable to crown a champion as the match ultimately headed to penalty kicks.
Milwaukee was the first team to the penalty line and the first to convert, taking a 1-0 lead on Henrik Fennefoss' make. Wright State headed to the line for its first attempt, ultimately missing. The Panthers' Joshua Kidder took to the line, converting to put Milwaukee up 2-0 before Harvey Slade found the back of the net for Wright State. Raider keeper Joel Sundell recorded his first of two back-to-back big stops on Milwaukee's next attempt and Wright State knotted the shootout at 2-2 on Ids Hannema's conversion.Â
Stefan Rokvic gave Wright State a momentary advantage before Milwaukee's Josh Kaye again tied the shootout and set up Jackson Dietrich, who connected with the back of the net on the game-winner.
