The Wright State men's soccer team will write another chapter in the Raider record books on Sunday afternoon as they take on Michigan in the program's first NCAA Championship Second Round appearance. Match time is set for 1 p.m. from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Sunday afternoon's game can be streamed on BIG TEN NETWORK+. Live Stats can be viewed here. Fans are also encouraged to keep up with the Raiders' trip to Ann Arbor via their Twitter page.
Wright State enters the second round of NCAA Championship with a 11-8-3 overall record, while Michigan holds a 11-4-5 mark. The Raiders tallied a 7-4-1 record away from home this season, while the Wolverines were 7-3-2 on their home pitch.
The Raiders, who are 7-4-1 in road matches, are tied for fifth in the NCAA with 46 goals. They are led offensively by Deri Corfe (13 goals, eight assists), Stefan Rokvic (9 goals, 5 assists), Jackson Dietrich (6 goals, 7 assists), Ids Hannema (7 goals, 2 assists) and Alec Philippe (4 goals, 3 assists) - with all having recorded at least 10 points this season. Joel Sundell has been the mainstay in goal, posting a 1.43 goals-against average and making 82 saves.
Sunday's match will be the third all-time between Wright State and Michigan, but the first since September 11, 2009 when the Raiders fell to the then-No. 24Â Wolverines 0-3. Both the Raiders and Wolverines secured trips to the NCAA Championship with shootout wins in the conference title games, as Wright State defeated Milwaukee and Michigan took down Indiana.
Michigan, ranked No. 17 in the country and the 13th seed in the tournament, is led by Nebojsa Popvic. Popovic, the 2019 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, has 23 points on the season (10 goals, three assists). He is the seventh man in Michigan program history to score 10 goals or more in a single season.
On Thursday night against Notre Dame the Raiders took control of the game just 27 minutes into the contest, as Alex Hummel gave Wright State a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half with the score tied at 1-all, the Raiders tallied back-to-back goals over a 2:15 stretch, beginning the 7oth minute on Zion Beaton's goal before Corfe found the back of the net moments later. Corfe's goal proved to be the difference after Notre Dame scored a late goal in the 85th minute.
Wright State and Michigan have a handful of common opponents this season, beginning with Notre Dame, who both teams beat. Both programs also tallied wins against Detroit Mercy and Cincinnati (Michigan's was an exhibition match), while each side fell to Western Michigan (Wright State's was an exhibition match). The Wolverines won their lone matchup with Oakland, while the Raiders split a pair of meetings, falling in the regular season before defeating Oakland in the Horizon League semifinals.
