Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Raiders fall late in Florida

Cole Gentry's three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining tied the game, but Ed Croswell's putback layup with 1.1 seconds remaining for La Salle gave the Wright State men's basketball team a 72-70 loss on Tuesday night at the Gulf Coast Showcase.

The Raiders will wrap up action in Florida against a familiar opponent, taking on Miami on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. Wright State (5-2) went to Miami (4-2) and came away with an 88-81 victory less than three weeks ago on November 9.

Tied at 70-all with 21 seconds remaining, La Salle (3-2) held for a final shot, a missed three-pointer, as the ball bounced loose under the basket with bodies from both sides around it. Croswell came up with the loose ball and put it up and in as he was fouled with 1.1 seconds to go to give the Explorers the two-point lead. Croswell missed the free throw attempt that followed, but the clock expired as Bill Wampler's near-full court heave went wide.

Wright State saw four players finish with double-digit scoring nights, paced by 15 points each from Jaylon Hall and Wampler. Tanner Holden and Gentry added 10 points each as all nine Raiders who saw action contributed to the scoring column.

Loudon Love was limited to just seven minutes, all in the first half, after taking a hard fall as he was fouled going to the basket in the game's opening minutes.

A back-and-forth game throughout, the entire first half was played within two possessions, with La Salle's five-point halftime lead the largest margin of the opening 20 minutes. The Raiders used an 8-2 run over a 2:32 stretch in the second half between the under-16 and under-12 timeouts to tie the game at 47-all but could never put any distance between themselves and the Explorers on the scoreboard. The game remained a two-possession game down the stretch, with the largest lead going to La Salle at five points with 2:05 remaining.

Tanner Holden hit a pair of free throws to pull the Raiders within three points at the 1:55 mark and the game remained at 70-67 in favor of La Salle as both sides combined to miss their next five shots. Off a La Salle miss with 29 seconds remaining, Grant Basile pulled down a rebound and found Gentry, who hit an NBA-range three with 21 seconds to go that tied the game at 70-all and set up the closing moments.

The Raiders shot 40 percent (22-for-55) from the floor, while La Salle shot 45 percent (27-for-60). Wright State out-rebounded the Explorers 32-31, but La Salle held advantages in bench points (35-15) and points in the paint (30-20). Wright State forced nine steals and 16 total La Salle turnovers, which lead to 23 points on the night.
