Raiders battle, fall on the road in HL opener

The Wright State women's basketball team battled against Milwaukee on the opening day of Horizon League play before the Panthers held on to hand the Raiders a 60-58 loss on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

With the loss, Wright State falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in Horizon League play, while Milwaukee improves to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in HL action. The Raiders will remain on the road for the second day of Horizon League action as they take on the Green Bay Phoenix on Monday at 8 p.m.

The Raiders scored first, but ultimately that wouldn't be enough as the Panthers pulled away with a 10-point lead with 4:02 left to play in the fourth quarter. Wright State fought back scoring eight points to pull within two points of Milwaukee in the final minutes of the contest.

Sophomore Angel Baker finished the night with 16 points in what would be her ninth consecutive double-figure game for the Raiders. Baker finished the contest shooting 7-for-16 from the field, 2-for-6 from beyond the arc and pulled down eight total rebounds. Freshman Jada Roberson contributed a career-high 13 points for Wright State finishing the contest shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Senior Michal Miller also had a double-digit afternoon as she added 11 points for the Raiders going 4-for-16 from the field, 1-for-6 from three point range and 2-for-2 at the free throw line; pulling down one rebound and providing one assist.

Wright State shot 35.6 percent for the game, while Milwaukee finished the night shooting 43.8 percent. The Raiders hit just four (21.1) three-pointers to the Panthers nine (34.6 percent). Wright State finished the night shooting 85.7 percent (12-for-14) from the free throw line while Milwaukee connected on just nine of their 17 such opportunities (52.9 percent).  

The Raiders won the battle on the boards, out rebounding the Panthers 39-28 overall with 14 offensive rebounds and 25 defensive. Milwaukee finished the night with five offensive and 23 defensive rebounds.
