@WSU_MBB Picks Up Share of Title with Win at Milwaukee

Raiders will be Number One Seed

The Wright State men's basketball team ended the regular season with a win at Milwaukee 65-62 to pick up the program's second co-championship and second number one seed in the upcoming Little Caesars Motor City Madness Horizon League Tournament.  The Raiders are now 19-12 and 13-5.  WSU's previous co-championship and number one seed came in 2007 when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

In the quarterfinals of the tournament, Wright State will host No. 8 seed IUPUI Tuesday at 8:00 PM.  The women, also a number one seed, will host Oakland at 5:30 PM.

Three Raiders scored in double digits, led by Loudon Love with 13 points and eight rebounds.  Parker Ernsthausen and Bill Wampler finished with 10 points each.  Freshman Malachi Smith and Mark Hughes pitched in eight points each.  Cole Gentry ended with seven.  WSU shot 47% from the field, nailing six three-pointers.  The Panthers were led by Vance Johnson with 18 points as UWM ended their season at 9-22 and 4-14.  The Raiders outrebounded the Panthers 31-27.

First Half
The Raiders jumped to a quick 3-0 lead as Love hit a layup and a free throw, but the Panthers stayed close, taking their lone lead of the half at 12-11.  WSU scored eight straight points for the Raiders' largest lead at 19-12.  UWM pulled back within one but Wright State went to the locker room up 25-21.  Smith was tops among the Raiders with eight points and three steals in 10 minutes.  Love finished with five points and seven rebounds.  WSU won the boards 22-13, shooting 37% from the field.  Wampler had four points.

Second Half
A layup by Love, two jumpers by Mark Hughes and a layup by Alan Vest helped the Raiders get off to a quick start.  Wampler hit a free throw to give WSU a lead of 10 points at 37-27.  Love made the score 49-38 with a base-line dunk and a free throw with 12 minutes remaining.  By the eight-minute timeout, the Panthers cut the lead to 52-47 with two layups and a three-pointer.  UWM continued to creep closer, making the score 57-56 at the final media timeout, coming out of the timeout to take the lead 58-57.  Milwaukee was down by 14 earlier in the half.  Hughes' layup gave the lead back to WSU at the 2:41 mark.  With just over a minute left, UWM made the score 60-59 but Gentry hit a 10-foot floater to take back the upper hand.  Under a minute, UWM hit two free throws to return to the lead.  With 35 seconds left, Love went 1-2 from the line to tie the game at 62.  Under 15 seconds, Hughes got a steal and was fouled on the layup, hitting one from the line.  UWM got the rebound and called a timeout with 7.8 seconds remaining.  Bryce Barnes was called for traveling with 3.8 seconds without getting a shot off, followed by a WSU timeout.  Gentry was fouled immediately, and he hit both to give WSU a 65-62 lead with three seconds on the clock.  UWM tried a long three that fell short as the buzzer sounded.

Nagy Said
"It was tough, no question about it.  I am really proud of the guys.  We talked about defense, and Parker did a great job tonight with it.  It is so much fun to watch, and it is great to have this happen for our seniors.  We started league play at 2-3 and lost Jaylon Hall to an injury.  Loudon struggled tonight, but the other guys picked him up.  Every time, Milwaukee gives us trouble because they are big and strong.  Hats off to NKU as well.  I am really happy for our guys.  They stayed positive and, even I, stayed positive."
