@WSU_SB Walks off in Home Opener

Wright State (12-12) swept a pair of games in a home opener doubleheader against in-state opponents Dayton and Bowling Green. The games included a walk-off finale over the Falcons of Bowling Green.

Game 1 – vs. Dayton

2nd Inning
Makenna Durieux pitched effectively in the first for the Raiders and worked around a base hit by recording two pop ups by the Flyers to conclude the inning. Durieux completed another scoreless inning in the second and then the offense went to work. Madison Hartman and Brianna Hutchinson each singled and Lauren Deitrick followed with another single which scored the game's opening run. Jordyn Poulson put down a beautiful bunt and ended up safe at first to load the bases for Wright State. Rebekah Lenos showed patience at the plate and was rewarded with an RBI walk. At the plate with a 2-0 lead, Meredith Keel ripped a ball back up the middle to give the Raiders a four-run advantage and force an early pitching change. Madison Whitaker stepped up and sent a ball flying past the right fielder for a triple and two RBI. When the dust settled, Wright State totaled six runs in the second.

6th Inning
The Flyers cut the lead in half with a 3-run homer to left off the bat of Abby Ehrenborg and trimmed it to just one after the fourth. Maddux Hughes entered in the fourth and stopped Dayton from adding any more runs in the frame. The right hander posted two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Raiders on top. Meredith Keel added an important run in the sixth with an RBI single. Wright State took a 7-5 lead heading into the seventh.

7th Inning
Hughes put the finishing touches on the Raider victory in the seventh inning. A groundout to Meredith Keel, a flyout to Jordyn Poulson, and a strikeout clinched the final outs for the Raiders.

Game 2 – vs. Bowling Green

3rd Inning
Rebekah Lenos started the second game with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the first run on the board. Bowling Green took back the lead on an RBI triple and an RBI single up the left side just out of the reach of the diving Meredith Keel. Wright State turned a pretty 5-4-3 inning to leave the inning down just one run. The Raiders added a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Lenos scored on another wild pitch from the Falcons and the game was tied 2-2.

5th Inning
Bowling Green added a run in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Olivia Otani exited in favor of Lexie Hilling who recorded a strikeout to end the fifth. Lenos reached base for the third time and Meredith Keel drew a walk. Both runners advanced into scoring position but the Raiders couldn't push across either runner.

6th Inning
The Raiders threatened in the bottom of the sixth with three straight walks by Macy McCall, Madison Mills, and Brianna Hutchinson. A passed ball allowed a run to score and a hit by pitch loaded the bases once more with just one out. The Raiders claimed the tying run on a wild pitch in a 4-4 game despite just three hits from Wright State.

7th Inning
Hilling returned to the circle and set down the Falcons in order including a big strikeout to close the inning. In the bottom half, Lauren Deitrick stood in for a hit by pitch and slid safely to second on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and second and no outs, Madison Hartman took advantage of the third Falcon error and the bases were loaded. A wild pitch scored the walk-off run for the Raiders.

Wright State enters Horizon League play after winning four games in just two days. The Raiders will return to WSU Softball Field on Friday to begin a three-game series against Detroit Mercy.
