Durieux's Shutout Propels @WSU_SB to Series Victory

After defeating Dayton in their home opener on March 20, the Wright State softball team and the Flyers met once again from WSU Softball Field in a Wednesday doubleheader. Dayton cruised to an 8-2 victory in game one, but Wright State responded with a big 3-0 shutout in the final game of the season between the two programs. The Raiders are now 16-25.

Game 1
1st Inning
Wright State started strong with two straight doubles by Rebekah Lenos and Madison Whitaker in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. After that, Dayton took control of the game after a solo home run to tie the game in the second and a three run homer in the third in a five run frame. The Flyers scored two more in the fifth to increases their lead to 8-1.

7th Inning
The Raiders added a run in the final inning but couldn't cut the lead further and fell in game one by a score of 8-2. Madison Mills, Macy McCall, Rebekah Lenos, and Madison Whitaker all singled in the inning. Wright State outhit Dayton by three, but Jessica Weaver worked around baserunners all game long in a complete game performance.

Game 2
3rd Inning
Raider starter Makenna Durieux and Flyer pitcher Catherine Jensen traded two scoreless innings to begin the series finale. Wright State broke the scoreless tie when Madison Whitaker shot a single to right and Brianna Hutchinson drew a walk. Raidyn Johnson then connected for an RBI single to right to put Wright State on the board.

4th Inning
Durieux continued to deal a one-hit shutout into the fourth. On offense, Madison Nunez drew a leadoff walk and Jordyn Poulson followed with another walk. Madison Whitaker reached on an infield single to load the bases for Brianna Hutchinson. Catherine Jensen recorded a big strikeout of Hutchinson to keep the Wright State lead to just one.

5th Inning
Durieux continued to roll through the Dayton lineup with her second straight perfect inning capped off with back-to-back strikeouts. In the home half, Wright State put runners at the corners with no outs. Meredith Keel put down a bunt and an error allowed Madison Hartman to score. Madison Nunez sent a ball to center field to score the third Raiders run.

7th Inning
Makenna Durieux continued her fantastic performance in the sixth by stranding a pair of runners in the sixth. In the seventh, Durieux gave up a single but responded with two straight punchouts to seal the victory and the series over Dayton.

Coach Laura Matthews commented, "Makenna pitched as well as she has all year for us. She has so much fire for us in the circle, and she really was a leader for us today. She's a competitor who has grown so much for us throughout the year." Durieux recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in her first seven-inning appearance this season.

Wright State will take the weekend off before heading to Youngstown State for a midweek series. The Raiders will wrap up the week's slate of games at home over the weekend against Oakland.
