Game Recap: Softball | | Aaron Lynn

@WSU_SB and NKU Split Two

Wright State and Northern Kentucky each won a game from WSU Softball Field on Tuesday. The Raiders used a walk-off single from Lauren Dietrick to win game one while the Norse posted 13 runs in the nightcap.  The Raiders are now 15-19, 3-5 while the Norse go to 10-20, 3-4.

Game 1

2nd Inning
Olivia Otani made quick work of the Norse in the opening inning and started the game with two perfect frames. Madison Nunez connected for the first Raider hit sending the ball straight back up the middle. Raidyn Johnson then stepped to the plate and crushed a home run over the left field fence to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Macy McCall kept the offense rolling with a single and stole second until Norse starter Taylor Ginther retired Rebekah Lenos with a strikeout.

3rd Inning
Otani ran through the Northern Kentucky lineup, recording nine straight outs and three strikeouts. In the bottom of the inning, Brianna Hutchinson found the left field gap for a double. Madison Hartman then earned an RBI with a single to right and Wright State took a 3-0 advantage.

5th Inning
Northern Kentucky finally recorded a hit against Otani in the fifth after the right-hander set down 14 straight hitters to begin her 17th start of the season.

Coach Laura Matthews commented after the game, "[Otani] had everything working and she was really smart with her location. Her stuff is always pretty good and she showed great competitiveness pitch to pitch."

The Norse added their first run of the game in part because of a Raider error. Otani escaped a bases-loaded jam with a ground ball to keep the Raiders up by a pair of runs. In the home half, Brianna Hutchinson launched a solo home run to right, her second of the season.

6th Inning
Maddux Hughes took over in the circle with two outs in the sixth and two runners on. A walk brought the winning run to the plate for Northern Kentucky and a passed ball cut the Raider lead to 4-2. Hughes recorded a big strikeout to escape the inning. Raidyn Johnson led off the bottom of the inning with a single, continuing her impressive performance from the plate, but NKU used a double play to face the minimum.

7th Inning
Lexie Hilling entered the game in a save opportunity for Wright State but struggled to get outs. Northern Kentucky tallied two runs to tie the game and threatened with the winning run on second. Hilling got a much-needed pop up to end the inning with the score tied 4-4. Rebekah Lenos started the bottom of the seventh with a single and Meredith Keel bunted her over to second. The Norse battled back and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to send the contest to extras.

8th Inning
Lauren Deitrick led off for Wright State, connected on a single to left and scooted to second after the fielder muffed the ball. Nunez lined a single to left and the Raiders threatened with runners at the corners and no outs. The Norse then issued a free pass to Raidyn Johnson to bring Lauren Deitrick up to bat. Deitrick promptly put a ball in play to score the winning run and Wright State defeated Northern Kentucky 5-4.

Game 2

3rd Inning
Like Otani in game one, Wright State starter Makenna Durieux cruised through the Northern Kentucky lineup, posting zeros on the board in the first three innings. Norse pitcher Emily Koperdak matched Durieux until the third. Meredith Keel reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. Brianna Hutchinson shot a ball through the middle and the speedy Keel crossed the plate for the first run of the game.

5th Inning
Durieux continued her success in the circle with a perfect frame in the fourth which included her fourth and fifth strikeouts of the evening. Northern Kentucky loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs and scored their first run on a walk. A double then cleared the bases and the Norse took a 4-1 lead forcing Durieux out of the contest. Maddux Hughes entered and struggled to find the strike zone, and the bases were quickly loaded again by the Norse. A passed ball and a wild pitch plated two more runs.

Wright State chipped into the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. Macy McCall singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on an error where Rebekah Lenos scored her. Meredith Keel legged out a double and Madison Whitaker ripped an RBI single into right. Whitaker was thrown out trying to take second for the last out of the inning and the Norse held a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth.

6th Inning
The Norse stuck for four more runs in the sixth to pad their lead. Wright State showed no quit and quickly connected for three straight singles to open the inning and loaded the bases with no outs. Lauren Dietrich put a ball in play to plate the fourth Raider run of the night. An error followed and allowed Madison Hartman to score as the Raiders pulled within five. Meredith Keel showed patience at the plate, drawing a walk and once more loading the bases for the Raiders. Brianna Hutchinson came through in the clutch with a big 2-RBI single.

7th Inning
NKU went back to work offensively and put up three more runs in the final inning to all but close out the game. Down 13-7, Wright State couldn't add any more scoring.

Wright State and Northern Kentucky will meet on Wednesday in a matchup to decide the series. First pitch is at 4:00 PM from WSU Softball Field.
