The Raiders knocked off Notre Dame in five sets for their first win of the season. It's the second consecutive season Wright State has defeated a Power 5 team, having beaten West Virginia in the opening weekend last year.
Taylor Gibson and Celia Power led the Raiders in kills, with 16 apiece. Junior Teddie Sauer was close behind with 13. Nyssa Baker was a defensive presence at the net, finishing with 10 blocks. Jenna Store led with 32 digs, and contributed 8 assists. Lainey Stephenson also excelled, recording six blocks, 48 assists and 24 digs in the five-set match.
Set 1:
Wright State started the set on top even after Notre Dame came out of a time out winning three straight points. Raiders fought to keep the lead, with help from big blocks by Nyssa Baker and Celia Powers. Game tied up mid game at 16-16, then Irish took the lead with a pair of aces. Offensively the Raiders were spread out across all hitters. Wright State held at set point picking up a couple serve receive errors. A net violation from Irish ends the opening set, Raiders won 25-23.
Set 2
Raiders tied the game at 10-10, as the Irish started the set with a lead. Nyssa Baker was on the front line racking up blocks in attempts to keep the Raiders in the game. The Irish pulled away having eight kills mid game compared to WSU six kills. Notre Dame lost the first challenge of the game, ending in favor of the Raiders. WSU offense having trouble putting ball in down, had a hitting percentage of .032 at 16-18. Raiders fought to add three points in a row which tied the game at 24-24. It was a close battle back and forth in the red zone, but the Raiders pulled through winning 28-26.
Set 3
Irish started out with a 10-6 lead again as Wright State slow to start. As the offense gained momentum on the Raiders side, they caught up to tie the game at 10-10. Irish timeout called then they came out on a four point run, but WSU answers back to take a lead at 15-14. The Raiders went on five point run which caused Notre Dame to call their last timeout of set. The two teams went point for point as they entered the last third of the game. Irish were first to 20 and the Raiders fell two points short, losing 23-25.
Set 4
Out of the gates the Irish held the lead against the Raiders being the first team to 10. At this point in the match Wright State had twelve blocks to Notre Dame's six, but WSU struggled to adjust to the smarter shots during this set. Taylor Gibson had back-to-back kills to shorten the Irish lead 10-7. But the Irish kept the lead to win the set, 25-17.
Set 5
Wright State added the first two points to start the last set. They ran with the momentum to be the first team to eight points, which is a big stepping stone in a 5th set. After the teams switched sides of the court, the Raiders led the Irish 10-8. Nyssa Baker added a kill that caused Notre Dame to challenge, but point went to Raiders side.
