Raiders Hit the Court in Italy

Wright State shook off a long day of travel and took down Senna Basket in Como, Italy 81-64. This was the first game of a three-game, ten-day trip throughout Italy for the Raiders.
Â
"Our guys were excited to play a game against another team after putting the work in this summer," head coach Scott Nagy said. "I think the travel fatigue set in in the second half, but we were able to push through and finish strong"
Â
International basketball rules vary slightly from what the Raiders are accustomed to back at home. For example, the shot clock is 24 seconds and after an offensive rebound resets to 14 seconds. Also, a player must initiate a dribble before taking a step, including a jab step.
Â
"We have been practicing with the different rules so we were familiar overall," senior Cole Gentry said. "There was still an adjustment period, but I think we know what to expect now."
Â
Physicality is encouraged in International play as well.
Â
"The game was more physical than I thought but we were able to adjust and play more physical ourselves," freshman Tanner Holden added.
Â
Senior Bill Wampler and Holden lead the team in scoring with 12 points apiece, while freshman Trey Calvin contributed 11 points and snatched a team-high three steals.
Â
Overall 12 Raiders saw action including freshmen Calvin, Holden and Dre Harris and grad transfers Jordan Ash and Aleksandar Dozic.
Â
"We got a lot of contributions from all of our new guys and as a whole we were solid but we have a lot we can get better at," Gentry said. "It was good to be in a live game situation so we know what we can improve upon."
Â
Wright State shot 48.4% on 30-62 from the field as a team, including draining 12 threes. The Raiders dominated the glass by pulling in 40 rebounds compared to 22 by the opponent. Leading the team in rebounds was junior Loudon Love, with eight.Â
Â
This game and the two remaining on the trip are valuable to the players and staff as they gear up for the 2019-20 season.
Â
"It was fun and great opportunity to get a chance to play with our team against other competition," Holden said. "Our chemistry is getting better since we are playing so far away from home."
