Clean sweep for the Raiders at Xavier Invitational

Wright State put an exclamation point on a very strong weekend at the Xavier Invitational by defeating the host Musketeers 25-21, 25-16, 25-13.  The Raiders didn't drop a single set all weekend, which included victories over William & Mary and Akron.

Taylor Gibson earned Tournament MVP, finishing the weekend with 29 kills and a .297 hitting percentage. Lainey Stephenson and Teddie Sauer also received All-Tournament recognition.  Stephenson finished the weekend with 13 kills, 85 assists and 36 digs. Teddie Sauer finished with 22 kills, committing only six errors, for a hitting percentage of .340.
 
Gibson led the match against Xavier with 12 kills, freshman Megan Alders contributed 11 and Powers knocked down nine. Stephenson had two solo blocks, and Alders added one to the combined nine blocks for the Raiders. Jenna Story picked up 23 digs, leading the match, while Stephenson was close behind with 17. After a collective defensive effort, the Raiders totaled 67 digs for the three-set match.

Set 1
Wright State started the set with a five-point lead. Powers and Alders knocked down two kills that led to a Musketeer timeout. Both teams tipped back and forth, but the Raiders won the point on Xavier's error. Stephenson dumped a ball over the net to add her second kill of the set as the score reached 17-13. Sauer served an ace to extend the lead to five, 20-15.  The Musketeers shortened their deficit to three points, but committed a service error on set point. Wright State won 25-21.
 
Set 2
The Raiders started the second set on another run of points, this time only by three. Alders ended a long rally with a kill to Xavier's left back. Points went back and forth, until the score tied 7-7. A dig by Jenna Story was finished with a kill from Sauer to extend the Raiders lead to three points. The score reaches 11-7 when Sauer added a block and kill, then the Musketeers called their first time out. Sauer added an ace to give the Raiders 14 points. Allie Matters called a challenge when the score was at 17-10, and won the call to give the Raiders a point. Wright State led Xavier by nine points as Alders scored point 20 of the set. An ace from Story drove Xavier to take their second timeout. Stephenson dumped to center court to add another kill as Xavier was unable pick it up. Alders added the Raiders set point but Xavier answered with a kill, the score was 24-16. Sauer knocked down set point for the Raiders win, 25-16.
 
Set 3
Xavier started the set with two aces then an error that added Wright State's first point. Story had a great dig that was finished with a kill by Powers to set the score at 2-2. Stephenson adds a kill before she went back to the service line; the Raiders extended their lead to 12-7. Wright State came out of a timeout and added a block from Gibson and Nyssa Baker. Three straight kills from the Raiders extended their lead by 10. Stephenson added an ace to the combined seven aces from the Raiders to set the score at 18-7. Alders came back in the game and added two kills to give the Raiders 22 points. A block from Powers and Sauer gives the Raiders match point. Alders finished the match racking up her 11th kill for the Raiders win, 25-13.

The Raiders ride a five-match winning streak into next weekend's Wright State Invitational.  Indiana State, Western Illinois and Toledo visit McLin Gym for six matches in all.  WSU takes their home court for the first time this season on Friday against Indiana State at 7:00 p.m., then continue on Saturday September against Western Illinois at 12:30 p.m. and Toledo at 7:00 p.m.
