11/6/2020 1:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Wright State women's basketball team received 118 total points as the Raiders were selected to finish third in the 2020-21 Horizon League preseason poll, announced by the conference on Friday afternoon.
Individually, junior Angel Baker was named First Team All-Conference and redshirt sophomore Shamarre Hale was selected to the Second Team.
Under fifth-year head coach Katrina Merriweather, the Raiders finished last season with a 19-12 record, including a 13-5 mark in Horizon League, finishing the regular season in a tie for second place in the final conference standings. After a first round win over UIC, Wright State fell to Cleveland State in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals, the last match to close the season.
Baker, a member of the 2019-20 Horizon League First Team last season, was the Raiders' leading scorer a year ago averaging 16.5 points per game. Her 512 points ranks third in program history during a sophomore season. The Indianapolis native scored in double-figures 24 times last season, including 11 games of 20-plus points. Her career-high 34 points came on the road against SMU on December 7, 2019.
Hale, who was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, last march, pulled down 236 total rebounds for the Raiders, averaging including 7.6 per game. Five of the Raiders contests would see Hale tally 10-plus rebounds along two double-doubles. The redshirt freshman scored in double-figures 10 separate times last season, including a career-high 18 points against Cleveland State on February 8, 2020.
Fans can follow the action for all season long, with every home game and all Horizon League contests available to watch on the ESPN platforms (ESPN3 or ESPN+).Â
