Wright State defeats UT Martin in extras

Wright State softball held on to defeat UT Martin in eight innings Sunday afternoon in Martin, TN for their second win of the day and third of the season. The Raiders connected on 12 hits, scoring 14 runs while the Skyhawks connected on 13 hits for 11 runs.

The Raiders took the lead in the top of the first inning as Rebekah Lenos singled to right field and Brianna Hutchinson would be hit by a pitch which set up an RBI single for Emily Daniel. The Skyhawks looked to answer in the bottom of the second by way of a wild pitch.

In the top of the third, Wright State scored nine runs started by a Grace Gressly double to center field. An error by UT Martin allowed Hutchinson to score setting up a two-run RBI double by Emily Daniel. Payton Baxter's two-run homerun would clear the bases for Wright State. Rebekah Lenos reached on a fielding error, advancing all runners and recording another run for the Raiders. Brianna Hutchinson singled up the middle for another Raider run before Grace Gressly's two-run double to left center field would end the inning.

UT Martin reached on a fielding error by the Raiders in the bottom of the third, which allowed two Skyhawk runs before a single by Paige Clark added another run. The Skyhawks added another run in the bottom of the fifth before scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. UT Martin added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie things up 10-10. As the game moved to extra innings, the international tie breaker rule was put into place, and both teams started extra innings with a runner on second base.

With a runner on second to start the frame, Wright State's leadoff hitter Brianna Hutchinson was walked followed by Raidyn Johnson being walked as well. With the bases loaded, Emily Daniel reached on a fielder's choice and Rebekah Lenos scored. Payton Baxter would reach on a fielder choice and Brianna Hutchinson scored. Madison Hartman's two-run single would bring the final runs of inning for the Raiders. The Skyhawks would add one in the bottom of the eighth but that wouldn't be enough.

Sophomore Carly Turner recorded in win in the circle for Wright State, eight runs on 11 hits and two walks. Lauren Deitrick also saw action on the mound for the Raiders, allowing three runs on two hits.
