Wright State softball fell just short against crosstown foe Dayton in eight innings Friday afternoon in Macon, Georgia. The Raiders connected for eight hits, outhitting the Flyers, but left 11 runners stranded in the loss.
The Flyers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run from Julia Blarr, before freshman
Grace Gressly got things started for Wright State in the top of the second inning as she connected on a solo homerun over the center field fence to put the Raiders on the board.
After back to back scoreless innings for both teams, Wright State sophomore
Madison Hartman's solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning would tie things up 2-2. The next three innings would be quiet for both teams as they battled but ultimately, seven innings wouldn't be enough. As the game moved to extra innings, the international tie breaker rule was put into place, and both teams started extra innings with a runner on second base.
In the top of the eighth, Wright State went down in order setting up Dayton's opportunity in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on second to start the frame, Dayton's leadoff hitter Morgan Mateja singled into left field and a Wright State throwing error would be the difference maker as the Flyer runner at second was able to score.
The Raiders left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings, contributing to six of their 11 stranded runners.
Senior
Brianna Hutchinson was the only player on either side with multiple hits, going 2-for-4, while senior
Lauren Deitrick added a double for the Raiders. Sophomore
Olivia Otani took the loss in the circle allowing one run and one walk in three innings of work. Sophomore
Carly Turner got the start for the Raiders on the mound, striking out two and allowing two runs in the opening four innings.
