Senior Spotlight: Track & Field

Editor's Note: The COVID-19 pandemic caused the abrupt end to sports for the 2019-20 academic year. We are not able to host Senior Day ceremonies to thank these seniors for their dedication to their chosen sport. As a result, we will be posting senior salutes for each senior class over the coming weeks.

On March 30, the NCAA Division I Council voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.

--
The Wright State track & field program saw its 2020 outdoor schedule halted before it could begin, as the Raiders' season ended prematurely after its six indoor competitions.

This weekend – May 8-10 – would have been the 2020 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships and some of the final opportunities to compete for women's track & field seniors Sophia Angelopoulos, Victoria Angelopoulos, Iman Salhieh, Molly Kearns, Cameron Campbell, Shelby Nolan, Tiffany Ward, Morgan Miller and Kayle Willis. Additionally, this spring marked the end of the collegiate careers for Jordan Brown, Nathan Dunn, Aaron Fullenkamp and Wyatt Stahl.

SophiaAngelopoulos_2019A native of Centerville, Ohio, Sophia Angelopoulos' favorite memory at Wright State was finishing third in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2019 Horizon League Championships and then standing on the podium next to teammate Brooklyn (Mikesell).

"Sophia is a fierce competitor and relentless worker, so much so that we have to spend much of the time holding her back," head coach Rick Williamson said. "Her sophomore year she finished fifth in both the flat 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles at the Horizon League Championships. Trust me when I say that is one of the most challenging doubles any track athlete can attempt to complete. And not only did she complete the doubt, she did so well in both."

Victoria Angelopoulos 2019A native of Centerville, Ohio, one of Victoria Angelopoulos' favorite memories at Wright State was when a meet at Purdue Fort Wayne and got delayed due to a storm. "We had to sprint to the vans, Aaron pulled out his ukelele and we were singing!"

"During Vicky's sophomore year of cross country, we had a plan to only use the season for training prep for the track season, since she was 'not a real cross country runner,'" head coach Rick Williamson said. "But of course, Vicky bucked all conventional wisdom and wound up being a darn good distance runner (besides being the League Champ for 800 meters) and one of the fastest women in program's history."

ImanSalhieh_2019A native of Springfield, Ohio, one of Iman Salhieh's favorite memories at Wright State was placing third in the 100 meters at the 2019 Horizon League Championships after being injured much of the spring and not expecting to do much.

"Iman has always brought a certain edge and confidence to the team. She has that type of personality that everybody is drawn to and feeds off in a very positive way," head coach Rick Williamson said. "Track & Field teams can oftentimes be divided by event specialties, but with Iman it never mattered, she got along with everybody."

Molly Kearns 2019A native of Russia, Ohio, Molly Kearn's favorite memories at Wright State include that first weekend when everyone moves back to campus and first practices that weekend before making brunch, hanging out, and getting to know all the new people and seeing those who lived away for the summer.

"Two of her many, many contributions to our program were her spot-on pacing in workouts (who needs a watch when you have Molly?) and finding the best places to stop and eat on any road trip," head coach Rick Williamson said. "When you look below the surface, these two attributes go a long way into explaining why Molly was successful in the classroom, on the course, and on the track. A real shame to the cancelation of the outdoor season was that Molly and Abbi were the top returners in the Steeplechase and they were both in the best fitness of their lives. They would have been tough to stop and I am confident would have stood on top of that podium at the HL Championships."

CameronCampbell_2019A native of Springboro, Ohio, one of Cameron Campbell's favorite memories at Wright State include traveling to Marshall for an indoor meet. "Not only did our bust not have heat, but the heat at the Marshall indoor facility was not working that day either. It is something we still joke about when we talk about overcoming adversity as a team and program."

"Besides her obvious running skills, Camm has that calm and positive energy that is contagious to any group," head coach Rick Williamson said. "She is a natural leader without ever forcing the issue. She gets along with everybody and genuinely cares for her teammates. We are excited to have her back for another year."

Shelby Nolan 2019A native of Whitehouse, Ohio, Shelby Nolan's favorite memory at Wright State was finishing second as a team at the 2018 Horizon League Cross Country Championships.

"Living beneath Shelby's quiet exterior is an extremely positive, intelligent, and supportive person. She truly wants everybody around her to excel and she can't help but to make people around her better," head coach Rick Williamson said. "What separates Shelby from most is her love for the process. She truly enjoys working diligently day after day to see what is possible."

TiffanyWard_2019A native of West Carrolton, Ohio, one of Tiffany Ward's favorite memories at Wright State was building a snowman and having a snowball fight after the NCAA Regional Cross Country race.

Aside from Tiffany's perfect record in the classroom, she has been the ultimate teammate over the last four years. She's supportive, easy going, and a great running partner," head coach Rick Williamson said. "Her running accomplishments sometimes get overlooked because she has been part of the best Raider teams ever. And that is a shame because she has been more than rock solid her entire career."

MorganMiller_2019A native of Chillocothe, Ohio, Morgan Miller's favorite memories at Wright State include all the times traveling to the conference championships together, watching teammates reach their goals, having fun while doing it, and of course, grabbing ice cream on the way home.

At the Cedarville Invite during her junior year, Morgan tore her ACL while landing in the long jump pit. She has spent the last year fighting challenges, battling frustration, and slowly getting back to the form she had prior to her injury," head coach Rick Williamson said. "The level of maturity, patience, and perseverance she has displayed has been wonderful to witness."

KayleWillis_2019A native of Huber Heights, Ohio, Kayle Willis ran in numerous events during the course of her Wright State career.

Kayle is possibly the quietest person on the team but her kindness always shines through," head coach Rick Williamson said. "She never complains, is super coachable, and is willing to do whatever to help the team - even run the 4 x 400 meter relay - when others can't."

Jordan Brown 2019A native of Tipp City, Ohio, Jordan Brown's favorite memories at Wright State include being on the starting line of a race and Big Mike (Board) says "nothing but domination" and then proceeds to growl at Ethan during the race. "That's just one example of the legendary words of wisdom from Big Mike."

Jordan came from a highly successful high school program and he carried that attitude over to our program here at Wright State," head coach Rick Williamson said. "He always helped bring that focus and excitement for the team's biggest meets of the season. Jordan is also one of those people that knows so much about so much, thus making any conversation more interesting."

Nathan DunnA native of Covington, Ohio, Nathan Dunn's favorite memory at Wright State was last fall's Regional Cross Country Meet. "There is nothing better than getting to compete head to head against some of the country's best runners."

I have been coaching for over 20 years and I have never worked alongside a more consistent athlete than Nate. I cannot recall one bad workout session or race in his entire four-year span at Wright State," head coach Rick Williamson said. "It is simply astonishing how on target he was all the time. For my money, he's the best distance runner that Wright State has ever had."

Aaron Fullenkamp 2019A native of Botkins, Ohio, some of Aaron Fullenkamp's favorite memories at Wright State include all the long talks after practice and long bus rides where anything and everything was discussed.

Aaron hales from Botkins, Ohio, one of the best small towns in all of the U.S.," head coach Rick Williamson said. "A terrifically smart guy with a great sense of people and the world. He always brought such a positive energy to the team, even when his running was not hitting on all cylinders. He could always see the bigger picture."

Wyatt Stahl 2019A native of Lima, Ohio, Wyatt Stahl's favorite memory at Wright State came at the NCAA Regional in 2017. "I took off at the gun and found myself at the front of the field. I turned my head to those around me and said, 'hey, I am winning' before eventually being overtaken by 176 runners!"

Wyatt has it all," head coach Rick Williamson said. "He's personable, kind, diligent, thoughtful, funny, and just a tad crazy. From day one his impact on the program has been so very positive."
