LAST TIME OUT
Wright State saw four players finish the night in double figures on the way to an 86-53 season-opening victory over Lake Erie inside the Nutter Center. Over 3,700 fans watched the Raiders in person for the first time in 632 days, including more than 800 Wright State students, as Tanner Holden finished with a game-high 19 points and Grant Basile notched his first double-double of the season with a 13-point, 13 rebound effort. Tim Finke turned in an 18-point night and Trey Calvin added 11 points as the other two players in double figures. Raider head coach Scott Nagy tallied his 110th victory at Wright State with the win, moving into second-place all-time for career victories at Wright State.
HERD THAT
Marshall opens its 2021-22 season against the Raiders on Friday night, a season after going 15-7 overall with a 9-5 Conference USA record, finishing third in the CUSA East, during the shortened season. Wright State and Marshall meet for the second straight season, but just the fourth time in program history, after a December 3 meeting in the Nutter Center last year. Four Raiders tallied double-digits in the loss, paces by Trey Calvin's 16, while Tanner Holden (13), Loudon Love (11) and Tim Finke (10) also had double figures. Prior to last season, the teams previously met in a home and-home series during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns, with each squad winning on its home floor.
MARSHALL MATTERS
Marshall officially opens its 2021-22 season on Friday night against the Raiders after a pair of exhibition wins against Davis & Elkins and Pikeville, both at home. Marshall was 9-3 at home last season as part of its 15-7 overall record. Marshall looks to replace its career steals leader Jarrod West and its all-time blocks leader Jannson Williams. West also led the Green & White with 126 assists during the 2020-21 campaign. Guard Taevion Kinsey returns as Marshall's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 19.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He has scored at least 10 points in 52 of his last 54 contests, and has finished in double-figures scoring in 34 straight games.
FAMILIAR WITH THE HERD. . .
Wright State and Marshall meet early for the second-straight season, this season with roles reversed. Last season at the Nutter Center, the Raiders were playing their first contest of the year while Marshall was taking the floor for the season time, while this season at the Cam Henderson Center, Wright State is on game two of the season and Marshall plays its opener.
HOLDEN IT DOWN
Wright State's Tanner Holden is no stranger to Marshall, having grown up about 45 minutes away in Wheelersburg, Ohio, and the Holden name is a familiar one to Marshall fans. Tanner's father, Rodney, is a former Herd men's basketball player and was inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. The elder Holden helped the Thundering Herd to three Southern Conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, finishing his career with 988 points and 812 rebounds. His .633 field goal percentage (119-of-188) in the 1986-87 season remains the best in Marshall history. His career percentage of .586 is No. 2 all time.
