Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Basile's career night not enough for Raiders Friday night

HUNTINGTON, WV – Grant Basile turned in a career-best 37 points on Friday night but it wasn't enough, as the Wright State men's basketball team fell 96-88 on the road against Marshall.

The Raiders (1-1) saw Basile turn in 22 points in the second half before he fouled out with just over three minutes remaining. Basile ended the night with a 12-for-21 shooting night overall, tallying 12 points from the free throw stripe as he added five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Playing 45 minutes from his hometown, Tanner Holden was the Raiders' other double-digit scorer, finishing with 25 points, including 15 in the second half, on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor while adding eight points from the stripe.

Marshall (1-0) scored the night's first six points on the way to jumping out to a 10-2 early lead after three minutes. The Raiders clawed back over the next seven minutes behind eight points from Basile and seven from Holden to pull to within a point at 22-21 halfway through the first half before going to the locker room tied at 43-all.

Wright State came out of the break and scored six of the first nine points before both sides settled in and traded baskets. Up four points, the Raiders used a quick 5-0 run to extend their advantage to 65-57 just before the under-12 timeout on the way to building what would be their largest lead of the night at 69-61 at the 11:14 mark. A Holden layup with five and a half minutes to play gave Wright State a three-point lead at 77-74, but Marshall responded with a 9-0 run in what proved to be the difference in the game.

Riley Voss finished with nine points off a trio of three-pointers, while Tim Finke and Trey Calvin each had six points. Finke's 11 rebounds were a game-high.

Wright State ended the night shooting 43 percent (29-of-67) overall from the floor and hit eight three-pointers (8-of-22, 36%). Behind 20 combined free throws from Basile and Holden, the Raiders were 77 percent from the stripe (22-of-28).

Marshall saw six players turn in double-digit scoring nights, paced by 22 points from Taevion Kinsey and 15 points from Andrew Taylor. The hosts finished the night shooting 52 percent (33-of-63) from the floor overall while also hitting eight three-pointers, six of which came in the first half. Marshall had 22 made free throws of its own (22-of-28).

Wright State was outrebounded 41-35, grabbing 26 of its rebounds off the defensive glass. The Raiders passed out 14 assists and forced 21 turnovers that became 17 points off those giveaways.

The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday night, making the trip west to take on Purdue. Tuesday night's contest will be a 7 p.m. tipoff and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
