LAST TIME OUT
Grant Basile turned in a career-best 37 points on Friday night but it wasn't enough, as Wright State fell 96-88 on the road against Marshall. The Raiders saw Basile turn in 22 points in the second half before he fouled out with just over three minutes remaining. Basile ended the night with a 12-for-21 shooting night overall, tallying 12 points from the free throw stripe as he added five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Playing 45 minutes from his hometown, Tanner Holden was the Raiders' other double-digit scorer, finishing with 25 points, including 15 in the second half, on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor while adding eight points from the stripe.
BOILER UP
Wright State and Purdue square off for the first time in program history when the Raiders make the trip to Mackey Arena. The Raiders will become the 12th and final of the 12 current Horizon League members that Purdue will have faced. The Boilermakers have faced Detroit Mercy 17 times, with 26 combined meetings against other HL programs, with Purdue Fort Wayne's six meetings the second-most. Purdue is 4132 all-time against the Horizon League, including a 34-2 mark at home. Purdue's matchup with Robert Morris came prior to RMU's move to the Horizon, while the Boilermakers also squared off against Butler several times when Butler was an HL member. Purdue will face a current Horizon League member for the ninth straight season. Purdue's three losses to Horizon League teams came against Detroit Mercy (Dec. 1959), Green Bay (Dec. 1991) and Milwaukee (January 26, 2005).
PURDUE POINTS
Purdue opened the 2021-22 campaign with back-to-back home victories in the first week of the season, downing Bellarmine on Nov. 9 (96-67) and Indiana State on Nov. 12 (92-67). Trevion Williams and Jaden Ivey were named preseason All-Americans by almost every publication. Purdue has had an All-American in five of the last six years and has finished in the top four of the Big Ten standings in 10 of the last 14 seasons under head coach Matt Painter. Head coach Matt Painter enters Tuesday's contest tied with Jud Heathcote for seventh on the Big Ten's all-time wins list (182).
BIG TIME BASILE
Grant Basile has reset his career-high scoring total in two of Wright State's last three contests, dating back to last season. Basile ended last season with a then-best 35 points in the Raiders' Horizon League tournament loss against Milwaukee last March, going 11-of-18 from the floor with a 12-of-15 mark from the free throw stripe. Basile turned in 37 points on the road Nov. 12 at Marshall, including 22 points in the second half, as he went 12-of-21 from the floor while hitting 12-of-14 from the stripe.
Basile was named the first Horizon League Player of the Week of the season, the League office announced on Monday, after he turned in a career-best 37 points on Friday night as the Raiders went on the road against Marshall, and ended the first week of play with a 25.0 points per game average through a pair of contests. Against Marshall, Basile was 12-of-21 from the floor and added a 12-for-14 mark from the free throw stripe. He's shooting 62 percent from the floor early on after opening the season with a 6-of-8 shooting night with 13 points in a win over Lake Erie, tallying his first double-double after adding 13 rebounds and four blocks.
EDWARDS CONNECTION
Former Wright State standout Bill Edwards, who sits atop the Raiders' all-time scoring list, is a somewhat familiar name for Purdue fans, as his son Vincent played for the Boilermakers from 2014-2018. Bill Edwards played in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers (1993–94) and had a 12-year career in Europe. He was also a member of the bronze medal-winning senior men's Team USA at the 1998 FIBA World Championship. He previously sat atop both the scoring and rebounding lists at Wright State before Loudon Love supplanted him from the rebound thrown last season.
HOLDEN ON HENSON WATCH LIST
Tanner Holden was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List on November 4. The award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player. Holden's selection follows the Henson recognition from former Raider Loudon Love, named to Lou Henson All-America Team the last three consecutive seasons.
