MILWAUKEE – The Wright State women's basketball team turned in a solid effort in Thursday night's Horizon League opener, but came up short down the stretch as Milwaukee handed the Raiders a 58-47 defeat.
After a slow start, Wright State (0-3, 0-1 HL) methodically chipped away until late in the third quarter when the Raiders tied the game at 30-all on a
KK White jump shot. From there, however, Milwaukee (1-3, 1-0 HL) closed the quarter on a 10-0 run in what proved to be the difference in the night.
The Raiders saw a pair of double-digit scoring performances, including a career-best 12 points by
Diamond Stokes to lead the way, while
Destyne Jackson finished with 10 points for her third straight double figure scoring game to start the campaign. Overall, eight different Raiders contributed in the scoring column, with eight points from
KK White and five points from
Deesh Beck.
Jada Roberson and
Jada Wright each tallied four points, while
Channing Chappell and
Shamarre Hale added two points each.
Wright State ended the night with 25 rebounds, including 15 on the defensive glass, while the Raiders had 13 steals and 21 total turnovers that they cashed in for 21 points off those giveaways. Thanks to the balanced scoring, the Raiders finished the night with 19 points off the bench.
Wright State shot 39 percent (21-of-54) from the floor overall while hitting a trio of three-pointers, while Milwaukee connected at 47 percent (23-of-49) overall with just two three-pointers. Megan Walstad finished with a game-high 19 points for the hosts, while McKaela Schmelzer had the lone double-double as she finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The Raiders continue Horizon League play on Saturday afternoon with a visit to face Green Bay that will close out the season-opening four-game road trip. Wright State and Green Bay will tipoff at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+, and then the Raiders will take the Nutter Center floor for the first time this year on November 24 against Xavier.
