PEORIA, IL – The Wright State women's basketball team saw three players turn in double-digit scoring nights in the season opener, but it was not enough as the Raiders fell at Bradley 84-65 on Tuesday night.
Wright State (0-1), which did not return a player on the roster who averaged double-digits last season, saw
Channing Chappell lead the way with 18 points, including five three-pointers, while
Destyne Jackson and
Jada Roberson each tallied 14 points for the Raiders.
Chappell, who averaged just three points a game last season, was 6-of-11 from the floor overall in 33 minutes of action while tallying 10 points in the first half. Jackson also had 10 points at the halftime break on the way to her 14, finishing 6-of-17 from the floor while filling her stat sheet with four steals, three rebounds and a pair of assists in her 33 minutes.
Roberson did the bulk of her scoring in the second half, tallying 10 of her 14 total points over the final 20 minutes with the aid of an eight-point third quarter. Roberson was 8-of-10 from the free throw stripe as she added seven rebounds and four steals.
Moving down the stat sheet,
KK White chipped in eight points and a pair of rebounds, while
Diamond Stokes tied her career-high with five points, adding four rebounds and two steals in her first start.
Jada Wright,
Deesh Beck and
Makira Webster each added two points to the final Raider stat line.
As a team, Wright State shot 34 percent (23-of-68) from the floor with eight three-pointers and was 11-of-18 (61 percent) from the free throw stripe). The Raiders narrowly lost the rebounding battle, 41-37, but hit the glass hard on both ends as they finished with 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 12 second chance points, and had 18 defensive rebounds. Wright State tallied 11 steals and forced 20 Bradley turnovers in total, leading to 19 points off those giveaways.
Bradley finished the night shooting 53 percent overall while hitting 48 percent of its three-point attempts, with three players turning in double-digits. Caroline Waite led all players with 23 points, while Daija Powell had 18 and Gabi Haack finished with 14 points for the hosts.
Wright State continues its four-game road trip to open the season on Saturday afternoon when the Raiders make the trip north to take on Toledo. Saturday's matchup is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff and is expected to be streamed on ESPN3.
