
Women’s Basketball prepares for Dayton and IUPUI

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team returns to action for road games against crosstown rival Dayton on Friday, December 31, and Horizon League foe IUPUI on Sunday, January 2. Friday's game will tip at noon ET, while Sunday is set for a 3 p.m. ET start. Both games will air on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State rolled past Division II Lake Erie 91-60 in front of over 2,700 fans on Education Day inside the Nutter Center. The win marked head coach Kari Hoffman's first victory at the helm of the Raiders. WSU raced out to a 33-10 lead after the first quarter and extended its edge to 52-21 by halftime. In the third quarter, the Raiders grew their advantage to 71-33 to put the game entirely out of reach, coasting to a 91-60 finish.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers are off to an 8-3 start to the 2021-22 campaign with feature wins against Purdue (78-62), Illinois (67-53), and Clemson (60-46). Three players in Erin Whalen, Makira Cook, and Jenna Giacone are averaging over 13.0 points per game, while Araion Bradshaw has dished out a team-leading 3.9 assists per contest. Both Whalen and Kyla Whitehead pace the team in rebounding, averaging 6.5 per game.
UD has successfully shot the ball, ranking 14th nationally in 3-point shooting (37.6%). The Flyers also sit atop the Atlantic 10 in fewest turnovers (135) and turnovers per game (12.3).
INSIDE THE WSU-UD SERIES
Dayton leads the all-time series 36-4. Friday will mark the first meeting between WSU and UD since 2014. Prior to the seven-year hiatus, the programs met 40 times from 1974 to 2014. The Flyers have won seven-straight games against the Raiders, with Wright State's last victory over UD occurring in 2006.
SCOUTING THE JAGS
IUPUI is 5-4 overall and 2-2 in HL play. Both conference losses were forfeits due to positive cases within the Jaguar program. IUPUI is coming off one of its biggest wins in school history, as they rallied from an 18-point deficit to take down No. 15 Iowa on the road, 74-73. The Jags came close to an upset at No. 11 Michigan, losing in overtime, 62-67.
IUPUI boasts fifth-year senior and three-time Horizon League Player of the Year Macee Williams, who is averaging 16.9 points on 63.3 percent shooting and 7.4 rebounds through seven games. As a team, the Jags have limited opponents to a nation-low 16.7% shooting clip from outside the arc. Offensively, IUPUI ranks eighth in the country in 3-point shooting (38.3%).
INSIDE THE WSU-IUPUI SERIES
WSU leads the all-time series 13-4. The Raiders have held the upper hand as of late, winning six out of their last eight meetings against IUPUI. A season ago, Wright State clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament by defeating the Jags 53-41 in the Horizon League Championship title game.
BACK IN A BIG WAY
Despite a three-week absence from play, a trio of Raiders achieved career-high marks in multiple categories against Lake Erie. KK White led the way with a career-best 20 points and 13 rebounds to go along with two steals and one block. Jada Wright posted her first double-double at WSU with 14 points and 15 rebounds – both career-highs. Meanwhile, Jada Roberson finished with career-best marks in points (19) and assists (7). Destyne Jackson added a career-high 18 points.
HOT FROM DEEP
Wright State went 14-of-25 (.560) from deep versus Lake Erie, as four different Raiders made three or more 3-pointers. Channing Chappell converted on a game-leading four 3-pointers, followed by Jackson, White, and Roberson knocking down three apiece. The last time WSU made 14 or more threes in a game transpired during the 2018-19 season against Kentucky State (12/13/18). The Raiders last shot above 56-percent from 3-point range in 2017 at Belmont (12/18/17), going 9-for-12 from deep.
SHOOTING DUO
Chappell and Jackson are shooting above 42% from 3-point range over WSU's last three games. In the span, Chappell is 7-of-16 (43.8%) on 3-pointers, while Jackson has gone 8-of-19 (42.1%) from deep. Jackson shot 3-of-7 from outside the arc against Green Bay (11/20) and Lake Erie. Chappell boosted her percentage by going 4-of-6 on 3-pointers against Lake Erie.
JADA THE MENACE
Roberson averages 2.50 steals per game, which ranks second in the Horizon League. She has recorded multiple steals in four games, including a career-high five against Milwaukee (11/18).
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK
This season, the Raiders have committed 91 turnovers, which is the second-lowest amount out of 348 Division I programs. Against Lake Erie, WSU had a season-low ten turnovers, including just two in the first half.
RIM PROTECTOR
Wright ranks fourth in the conference in blocks per game (1.4) and sixth in total blocks (8). The Chicago native has totaled multiple blocks in three games, highlighted by a season-high three stuffs versus Lake Erie.
JACKSON STEPPING UP
Jackson has turned in double-digit scoring performances in all six of Wright State's contests to date. She averages a team-leading 14.0 points per game, good for the eighth-highest mark among conference players. The Lexington, Ky., native played in all 27 contests with 14 starts as a freshman, averaged 4.3 points per game last season with only three double-digit scoring games. Jackson is shooting 35% through six games, an increase from her 30% shooting mark from last season while increasing her minutes per game from 25.2 to 33.7 to start this season.
NOT YOUR REGULAR YEAR
The Raiders have missed six scheduled contests due to COVID-19 protocols, including their last two games against Indiana and UIC. Wright State's conference stretch against Purdue Fort Wayne and Cleveland State were considered forfeits due to League regulations.
