Women’s Basketball tests Dayton in non-conference finale

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team closed 2021 with a 75-65 loss to Dayton on Friday afternoon inside UD Arena. The matchup marked the first meeting between WSU and UD since 2014. 

In the second quarter, the Raiders (1-8, 0-4 HL) trailed by 17 points, 32-15, but reduced their deficit to just one point, 61-60, with 6:08 remaining in the non-conference finale. Despite the late charge, the Flyers (9-3) had the last punch, closing the game on a 14-5 run to clinch the victory.

Jada Roberson paced Wright State with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, four steals, two blocks, and two assists. Destyne Jackson scored in double-figures for the seventh-straight game, as she finished with 16 points and added five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Channing Chappell poured in 13 points on 5-of-8, including a 3-of-5 clip from outside the arc. Defensively, the sophomore grabbed a career-best five rebounds.

As a team, WSU shot 42-percent (24-of-57) from the floor and 35% (6-of-17) from deep. The Raiders bested the Flyers in 3-point shooting and fast-break points (18) while evening Dayton in second-chance points (8) and points off turnovers (12). To add, Wright State garnered 37 rebounds, with six different Raiders collecting three or more. 

Dayton built a 23-13 lead after one quarter of play. However, WSU and UD each scored 52 points apiece for the remainder of the game. Trailing 58-48, Wright State made its big break by opening the fourth quarter on a 12-3 run, bringing the score to 61-60 in favor of UD. Chappell drilled back-to-back 3-pointers, while Roberson netted five points in the stretch. 

Makira Cook scored a game-high 29 points for the Flyers, including seven points in UD's closing run in the fourth quarter. Magassa Tenin added in nine points and 11 rebounds in the winning effort.

The Raiders will return to action on Sunday, January 2, at IUPUI. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
