The Wright State men's soccer picked up its third win of the 2021 spring season, defeating IUPUI 2-0 Thursday afternoon at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.
With the win, Wright State improves to 3-2-1 overall (3-2-1 HL) and IUPUI drops to 0-5-0 overall and (0-5-0 HL). The Raiders will return home to Alumni Field and welcome Green Bay for the final home contest of shortened spring season.
IUPUI looked to score early, as Ryan Choukri's shot was saved by
Sebastian Jimenez for his first of the afternoon.
Zion Beaton tallied the only goal of the first half in the 19th minute when he headed in a pass from
Presten Manthey to give Wright State a 1-0 lead over the hosts. Beaton's goal marked his second goal of the season, while Manthey's assists marked his third helper of the season.
Reece Allbaugh looked to increase the Raiders' lead in the 41st minute, but his shot was saved.
Just three minutes into the second half,
Reece Allbaugh tallied his first career goal as he connected on a pass from
Brayden McNitt in the 48th minute to give the Raiders a 2-0 advantage. The Jaguars attempted to get on the board in the 52nd minute, but their attempt was saved by Jimenez. With just ten minutes left to play,
Jared Edmonson looked to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead but his shot was saved by IUPUI's keeper for what was Wright State's final shot of the contest.
Notably, Thursday's contest marked Jimenez's first shutout as a Raider.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Both teams recorded 12 total shots over the 90 minutes, but Wright State found the advantage in shots on goal tallying six to IUPUI's four. Jimenez and Lucas Morefield each tallied four saves in goal.
- Reece Allbaugh tallied a team-leading five shots for the Raiders with four of his shots being on goal. Philipp Rimmler and Presten Manthey each tallied two shots for Wright State, while Alex Hummel, Zion Beaton, and Jared Edmonson each had one shot.
- Wright State's victory over IUPUI tallied the eighth consecutive victory over the Jaguars, dating back to 2011 – a 1-0 win also in Indianapolis.
