Volleyball sweeps Fort Wayne, advances to host HL Championship next Saturday

The top-seeded Wright State volleyball team took care of No. 4 seed Purdue Fort Wayne in three sets on Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the Horizon League Volleyball Championship.

The Raiders (15-1) advance to host No. 2 seed UIC in the championship match on Saturday, April 3. The match is set for 1 p.m. inside McLin Gymnasium and will be streamed on ESPN+. The Flames (14-2) advance to the title match after a five-set win over No. 3 Northern Kentucky on Sunday.

Wright State tallied its 11th three-set win in 16 matches this season on Sunday, finishing with a .300 hitting percentage as a team in the first set on the way to a .211 hitting percentage overall. Fort Wayne dug itself into a hole early, committing seven attacking errors in both of the first two sets on the way to set hitting percentages of -.053 and .040, finishing the afternoon with a .054 overall team hitting percentage.

Teddie Sauer led the Raider offense with an 11-kill afternoon, the only player to reach double digits, while Nyssa Baker finished with nine kills and a match-high seven blocks. Celia Powers added eight kills and four blocks as well, while Lainey Stephenson passed out 30 of Wright State's 41 assists.

Jenna Story recorded 24 digs as the Raiders had three players with double-digit dig totals, with Story joined by Powers' 16 and 13 from Stephenson.

SET 1
The Raiders never trailed in the set, scoring eight of the first 12 points to take control before rolling off five of six points midway through the set behind a pair of kills from Powers and kills from Megan Alders, Baker and Sauer. Wright State closed the set by tallying eight of the final 10 points, with kills from Alders, Stephenson, Baker and Mallory Ladd aided by three late Fort Wayne attacking errors.

SET 2
Wright State again started quickly, this time recording six of the first eight points behind kills from Sauer, Alders and Powers before Fort Wayne used a four-point run to pull to within one at 9-8. After a short back-and-forth scoring stretch, the Raiders tallied six of the next eight points, aided by back-to-back service aces from Story, to push to the 20-point mark. A pair of attacking errors from Fort Wayne pushed the Raiders to set point, where Powers closed the set with a kill.

SET 3
Back-and-forth early and tied at seven, Wright State tallied four of five points behind a pair of Baker kills to take the lead. Tight throughout the set, the Raiders used a four-point run via a trio of Fort Wayne miscues and a Story ace to push the advantage to 23-16. Despite a final flurry from Fort Wayne, the Raiders closed the afternoon on kills from Powers and Sauer to head to the finals.
