Two late second half goals were the difference for the Wright State women's soccer team as they defeated Youngstown State 2-1, Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the win, Wright State improves to 4-4-0 overall with the same mark in Horizon League play while Youngstown State falls to 0-7-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the conference. The Raiders are currently in seventh place in the Horizon League standings heading into their final game of the season. This year's Horizon League Tournament is taking the top four teams only, based on league points per match.
Youngstown State was first to score after a scoreless first half, as the Penguins found the center of the next just 43 seconds into the second half to put the visitors up 1-0. Wright State found the momentum following halftime to outshoot YSU 12-4 and record two corner kicks.
In the final seven minutes of the contest, Wright State tallied both its goal to earn the victory.
Sidney Kemp headed a corner kick from Regan Clark in the 84th minute to tie the match at 1-1 with just over seven minutes to play. Notably, Kemp's goal marked her first as a Raider. Just over three minutes later Wright State took the lead as
Josie Krupp's shot bounced into the goal off a Penguin defender in the 87th minute.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Wright State found the advantage in total shots 20-14 (11-7 on goal). The Penguins found the edge in the first half 10-8, but the Raiders came back to find a 12-4 leverage in the second half.
- Lauren Borchert tallied a team-leading six shots (one on goal), while Kaley Mincy added four shots (three on goal). Lena Jenssen recorded three shots (two on goal) for the Raiders.
- Prior to an injury that took her out for the remainder of the match, Jessika Seward tallied six saves for the Raiders while YSU's Brooklyn Kirkpatrick tallied nine.
