Wright State heads to Indy to face Cleveland State in HL Semis

The top-seeded Wright State women's basketball team will make the short trip to Indianapolis for the 2021 Horizon League Championship semifinals on Monday morning as the Raiders are set to face No. 6 Cleveland State inside Indiana Farmer's Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. from Indianapolis and will be available via stream on ESPN+.

Per the Horizon League's policy, the championships will be played without fans for all rounds of the tournaments. Team pass lists and complimentary tickets will also be prohibited. Raider fans are encouraged to follow all the action via ESPN+ or Live Stats.

– The Raiders are coming off a 74-56 victory in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals over No. 8 Northern Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon inside the Nutter Center.

In a contest that saw two different lead changes and the contest tied 11-all, Wright State used a 12-0 run over the final two minutes of the first quarter and start of the second to find the advantage. The Raiders held NKU to just 7.7 percent shooting (1-for-13) for the second quarter (nine points total), while shooting 57.1 percent themselves. Wright State found the advantage in the fourth quarter, tallying 21 points to the Norse's 16 and shooing 80 percent from the floor in the quarter. Angel Baker tallied a game-high 23 points for the Raiders – her seventh 20-plus point outing this season. Emani Jefferson added 12 points for her 13th double-figure outing and fourth consecutive while Tyler Frierson and Shamarre Hale each added eight points. 

CLEVELAND STATE – The Vikings tallied a 39-36 Horizon League Championship quarterfinal upset victory at No. 3 Green Bay Tuesday evening to advance to the semifinals for the second straight season.

Cleveland State had a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter before starting the second quarter off with a three-pointer just 29 seconds in the frame to extend the advantage. Following the break, the Vikings held the Phoenix to just nine points over the ten minute period before Green Bay posted a 15-2 run, closing the gap to single digits at the 54-46 mark. Mariah White would then put the game away for the Vikings with another pair of free throws with just four seconds remaining, as the Vikings were able to hold on for the 69-63 victory. Four different Vikings finished the contest in double-digits, let by Mariah White with 22. Destiny Leo added 16 points, while Barbara Zieniewska posted 12 and Isabelle Gradwell chipped in 10 points.

THE MATCHUP
  • Monday's game will mark the 81st meeting between the two programs all-time, with Wright State owning a 42-38 advantage in the series.
  • During the regular season, the Raiders completed the weekend sweep of the Vikings (64-54 Friday and 64-46 Saturday) on the road in Cleveland back on January 8 and 9.
  • Last March, these two teams faced off in the Horizon League quarterfinals, with Cleveland State earning a 63-52 upset victory inside the Nutter Center.
