The Wright State men's soccer team battled the preseason favorite Oakland Golden Grizzlies to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon behind a pair of goals from Lars van der Vlugt and Alex Hummel.
The Raiders move to 2-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 in HL action, while Oakland moves to 3-1-2 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.
Wright State looked to attack early as the Raiders tallied 10 shots in the first half to Oakland's one. The Golden Grizzlies found the advantage in corner kicks 4-3 at the break. Just six minutes into the contest, Harvey Slade tallied two shots for the Raiders before Presten Manthey's shot to the bottom center of the net would be saved by Oakland's Nour Moaoui.
Lars van der Vlugt tallied his first goal in a Raider uniform in the 61st minute as he connected on a pass from Manthey to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead, just nine minutes later Oakland answered as Reid Sproat found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Prior to the Golden Grizzles' goal, Harvey Slade was awarded his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card and the Raiders having to play with 10 men the remainder of the contest.
The final twenty minutes of regulation would see two goals scored less than two minutes apart. The Golden Grizzles struck first as Kieran Hayes gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 76th minute. In traffic, Alex Hummel headed in his second goal of the season in the 78th minute.
Ids Hannema's shot just 15 seconds into the first overtime period ultimately would be the Raiders' only chance in the 10 minute period. In the final 10 minutes of overtime, two yellow cards were awarded but neither team was able to break the scoreline as the final seconds ticked away.
