Late runs down Raiders on Saturday in series finale

The Wright State baseball team fought back to tie the game in the seventh inning Saturday, but Florida Gulf Coast was able to plate two late runs as the difference and the Raiders fell 6-4 in the series finale down in Alabama.

Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Raiders chipped away at the margin with single runs in the fifth and sixth thanks to solo home runs before a two-run seventh tied the game. FGCU used a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to break the tie and wrap up the series win.

Florida Gulf Coast got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, first with an infield single to plate a run before a Raider throwing error brought home two more runs. In the third, FGCU added o the lead with a solo homer before the Raiders got the offense going.

In the fifth, Alec Sayre led off the inning with a solo homer to center field before Sammy Sass connected solo homer of his own in the sixth, this time with two outs, to pull Wright State within two runs. In the seventh, Sayre led off with a single and later scored on a FGCU throwing error before Gehrig Anglin tied the game with his RBI single through the left side. The Raiders would eventually load the bases but left them stranded to end the inning and the score remained tied.

Reliever Julian Greenwell stranded a pair of Florida Gulf Coast runners in the bottom of the seventh, but after the Raiders went down in order in the top of the eighth, FGCU used a one out, two-run double from Joe Kinker to break the tie with what would be the eventual winning runs. Wright State had one final chance in the ninth, with Anglin reaching with a one-out single, but he would become the seventh and final stranded runner of the afternoon.

Sayre, Anglin and Alex Alders each had two hits for the Raiders, with the one hit each from Sass and Konner Piotto. Austin Cline took the tough luck loss, striking out six over six innings while allowing seven hits and four runs (one earned).

Florida Gulf Coast got two hit days from three players and two RBI from Kinker and Ian Farrow. Joey Mugavero earned the win after 2.1 innings of one hit relief.
