
Raiders finish second at 2021 Horizon League Championship

The Wright State golf team earned runners-up honors at the 2021 Horizon League Championship in West Lafayette, Indiana on Tuesday afternoon, with three Raiders finishing inside the top five individually and all five players tallying op 20 finishes.
The Raiders were two-over on Tuesday with a final team round of 290, their best of the week, and finished 13-over overall. Oakland won the team title behind a six-over team score, while the next closest Horizon League team following Wright State was Cleveland State's 42-over in third place.
Mikkel Mathiesen paced the Raiders, finishing tied for third with a one-over final score after carding a one-over 73 on Tuesday. Bryce Haney and Austin Schoonmaker each finished tied for fourth at four-over to give Wright State a trio inside the top five. Haney tallied four birdies on Tuesday and was two-under on the day to make the jump to fifth, while Schoonmaker was three-over in the final round.
Tyler Goecke had four birdies, two on the front nine and two on the back nine, on the way to an even par final round to finish tied for 10th at six-over for the Championship. Cameron Willis rounded out the Raider lineup with a four-over final round as he finished the week at 10-over in a tie for 16th.
As a team, Wright State has carded 167 pars to lead all teams, while the Raiders' 41 birdies over the 54 holes trailed only Oakland's 49 atop the team high mark. Individually, Haney's 36 pars were the second-most of the field, while Mathiesen tallied 10 birdies, three off the top number for the weekend.
Oakland's Thomas Giroux won the individual title at two-under overall, while the Golden Grizzlies also had Chris Handy (tied for third) and Yaro Ilyenko (tied for eighth) finish inside the top 10.
