Raiders rally, down Dayton in five-set thriller Friday night

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team snapped off three straight set wins to finish off a five-set comeback win on Friday night against Dayton inside the Frericks Center. Faced with match point down two points in the fifth set, the Raiders ended the night on a 4-0 scoring run to take the final set 16-14 and complete the reverse sweep.

Wright State (6-2) wraps up the weekend with a 7 p.m. match against Illinois State Saturday night inside McLin Gymnasium. Friday night marked the second straight five set thriller between the two teams after the Flyers came away on the winning side in the spring season. The Raider win Friday night snapped what had been a six-match winning streak for Dayton, as Wright State notched its first win in the series since November 2008 – a 3-1 victory that also came inside the Frericks Center.

Friday night, the Raiders dropped the opening two sets to the Flyers (2-4) by scores of 25-18 and 25-13 before collecting themselves for the final three sets. The third set was tight early before an 8-3 Raider run gave them a 17-9 advantage. Dayton answered with a six-point run of its own to pull within two, but Wright State by tallying eight of the final 10 points for a 25-18 third set victory.

The fourth set was a set of runs by both sides, with Wright State tallying a quick, four-point run to take the lead at 9-8 before later in the set Dayton had a three-point run of its own to tie the score at 17-all. After trading points, the Flyers had another 3-0 run to push ahead to 22-20, but again the Raiders responded, closing the set on a 5-1 run to force the deciding set after a 25-23 fourth set win.

The winner-take-all fifth set saw the Flyers jump ahead 5-1 early and extend the advantage to 6-2 before the Raiders began their push. Wright State tallied five of the next six points to knot the score at 7-all, but Dayton answered with three-straight points to edge out to a 10-7 lead. Down four at 12-8, the Raiders knotted the score at 12-all thanks to four straight Dayton attacking errors before back-to-back Flyer points pushed the match to its breaking point.

With their backs against the wall, the Raiders completed the comeback with four straight points, first on a kill by Megan Alders before tying and taking the lead on a pair of Flyer attacking errors. On its first chance at match point, Wright State ended the night with a Grace Hauck kill in the middle of the court through a pair of Dayton would-be blockers.

Callie Martin led Wright State with 12 kills, while Alders tallied 10 and Celia Powers added nine of her own. The Raiders finished with four aces, including a pair from Jenna Story, who also recorded 25 of Wright State's 80 digs, with Lainey Stephenson (17) and Martin (13) both pitching in. Stephenson passed out 35 of the Raiders' 41 assists on the night.
