MILWAUKEE – The Wright State volleyball team was unable to find its footing on Friday night, as the Raiders fell in three sets to tournament host Marquette in the second of three matches this weekend for Wright State.
The Raiders (7-4) now get set to close the weekend with a meeting against UTSA on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET, their final non-conference match of the fall before entering Horizon League play next weekend.
Marquette (8-2) took the opening set 25-16 before finishing the night off with set scores of 25-18 and 25-20.
Against Marquette,
Megan Alders and
Celia Powers led the way with seven kills each while
Teddie Sauer and
Callie Martin each added five as seven Raiders notched kills. Wright State had just a pair of aces – one each from Powers and
Jenna Story – while
Nyssa Baker was the only Raider with multiple blocks, finishing with three.
Lainey Stephenson passed out 20 of the Raiders' 28 total assists, while Story (15) and Powers (11) combined for the bulk of Wright State's 50 total digs.
Marquette used an 8-2 run to gain control midway through the opening set before a 7-0 run in the second set ahead of a 6-2 stretch to close that set. The hosts used a 6-0 run to stretch out to an advantage in the final set before the Raiders answered back with a five-point run of their own to pull within three. After trading points through the middle of the third set, Marquette tallied six of the final eight points in the set to close the night out.
