
Women’s Basketball heads north for a pair of HL games

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team travels north for a pair of Horizon League games. The Raiders open their road trip at Oakland on Thursday, January 13, at 7 p.m. and follow with a 2 p.m. matchup at Detroit Mercy on Saturday, January 15. Both games will televise on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State fell to IUPUI 77-62 in its return to conference play on Sunday, January 2. Despite outshooting IUPUI in the opening quarter, the Jags built a 24-13 advantage, anchored by 10 free throw makes on just 11 attempts. The Raiders trailed by nine or more points for the remainder of the game en route to their second loss in a row. WSU was at its best in the fourth quarter, outscoring IUPUI 23-13. Defensively, the Raiders forced 15 Jaguar turnovers and bested the home team in steals (6) and blocks (3).
TOUGH LUCK
Wright State opened the 2021-22 campaign with five games in a 15-day span but has been limited to three games since November 25. WSU's last two scheduled games were ruled as forfeits by the Horizon League due to COVID-19 implications within the program. The Raiders have dealt with eight cancellations on the season, including four by way of forfeit.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland is 4-2 against conference opponents, good for third in the Horizon League standings. The Golden Grizzlies are in their hottest stretch of the year, with consecutive road wins at Milwaukee (66-53) and Purdue Fort Wayne (63-60). OU was down to just six players against PFW, but erased a 16-point deficit to win.
Kahlaijah Dean headlines the Golden Grizzly returners, as the senior guard leads the team in scoring (18.2 ppg), assists per game (2.3), and steals per game (2.4).
INSIDE THE WSU-OAKLAND SERIES
The Raiders have controlled the all-time series versus Oakland with 18 wins in 20 meetings. In last year's 74-49 victory over the Golden Grizzlies, Jada Roberson turned in her first collegiate double-double with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. WSU made history in its 80-75 win against OU during the 2017-18 season with school records in free throws makes (33) and free throw attempts (48).
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit Mercy is off to an 0-14 start under first-year head coach LaTanya Collins. Despite being one of six Division I programs winless on the season, the Titans have been competitive, as seven of their 14 losses have been decided by single digits. Last weekend, UDM led Purdue Fort Wayne 45-39 after three quarters but were outscored 23-12 in the final period, resulting in a 62-57 loss.
Sydney Searcy ranks first on the team in several categories, including points per game (10.5), 3-point shooting (39.4%), assists per game (2.2), and steals per game (2.8). Irene Murua leads Detroit in rebounds per game (5.9) and has totaled a team-high two double-doubles. As a team, UDM sits atop the conference in steals per game (10.7) and turnovers forced (19.92).
INSIDE THE WSU-UDM SERIES
Saturday will mark the 61st-career meeting between WSU and UDM. The Raiders lead the all-time series 32-28, which includes eight-straight victories over Detroit. A season ago. Wright State won both meetings by 20-plus points. KK White enjoyed a career outing in WSU's 75-55 win at Detroit (12/12/20), totaling 18 points and four blocks, both career-high marks.
JADA THE MENACE
Roberson is averaging 2.75 steals per game, ranking 33rd in the country and first in the Horizon League. She has recorded multiple steals in six games, highlighted by a career-high five in WSU's conference opener at Milwaukee (11/18).
HEATING UP AT THE RIGHT TIME
Over Roberson's last five games, she is averaging 15.4 points on 50% shooting (31-of-62) along with 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 steals. In the span, the Muskegon, Mich., native has achieved single-game career highs in points (20 at Dayton), assists (7 vs. Lake Erie), and blocks (2 at Dayton).
SHOOTERS SHOOT
Channing Chappell ranks 42nd nationally and second in the HL in 3-point shooting percentage (42.1%). The second-year guard has knocked down a team-leading 16 threes, including one or more in her last five games.
RIM PROTECTOR
Jada Wright ranks fourth in the conference in blocks per game (1.3) and eighth in total blocks (9). The Chicago native has totaled multiple blocks in three games, including a season-high three stuffs versus Lake Erie.
FINDING A GROOVE
In her last two games, Wright is averaging a double-double with 13.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks. The junior college transfer tallied 14 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks against Lake Erie and followed the impressive performance with 13 points, seven rebounds, and one block at IUPUI. In Wright's first 31 career games as a Raider, she did not reach double-figure scoring once.
JACKSON STEPPING UP
Destyne Jackson has turned in double-digit scoring performances in seven out of Wright State's eight contests to date. She averages a team-leading 13.6 points per game, good for the ninth-best mark among conference players. The Lexington, Ky., native played in all 27 contests with 14 starts as a freshman, averaged 4.3 points per game last season with only three double-digit scoring games. Jackson is shooting 35% through eight games, an increase from her 30% shooting mark from last season while increasing her minutes per game from 25.2 to 33.1 to start this season.
WIN NO. 1
Wright State rolled past Division II Lake Erie 91-60 in front of over 2,700 fans on Education Day inside the Nutter Center. The win marked head coach Kari Hoffman's first victory at the helm of the Raiders. WSU raced out to a 33-10 lead after the first quarter and extended its edge to 52-21 by halftime. In the third quarter, the Raiders grew their advantage to 71-33 to put the game entirely out of reach, coasting to a 91-60 finish.
BACK IN A BIG WAY
Despite a three-week absence from play, a trio of Raiders achieved career-high marks in multiple categories against Lake Erie. White led the way with a career-best 20 points and 13 rebounds to go along with two steals and one block. Wright posted her first double-double at WSU with 14 points and 15 rebounds – both career-highs. Meanwhile, Roberson finished with career-best marks in points (19) and assists (7). Jackson added a career-high 18 points.
HOT FROM DEEP
Wright State went 14-of-25 (.560) from deep versus Lake Erie, as four different Raiders made three or more 3-pointers. Chappell converted on a game-leading four 3-pointers, followed by Jackson, White, and Roberson knocking down three apiece. The last time WSU made 14 or more threes in a game transpired during the 2018-19 season against Kentucky State (12/13/18). The Raiders last shot above 56-percent from 3-point range in 2017 at Belmont (12/18/17), going 9-for-12 from deep.
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK
The Raiders have committed 120 turnovers this season, the lowest amount of 348 Division I programs. Against Lake Erie, WSU had a season-low ten turnovers, including just two in the first half.
