ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Wright State women's basketball team dropped a 62-51 contest at Oakland on Thursday night inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
Edecia Beck had an all-around day for the Raiders (1-12, 0-8 HL) with a team-leading 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a career-high two blocks. The fourth-year forward also matched career-best marks in points and rebounds.
Destyne Jackson poured in 12 points, good for her eighth double-digit scoring performance in nine games.
Jada Wright blocked a career-high four shots and added six points and 10 rebounds, while
Jada Roberson tallied nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
The Raider defense caused havoc in the Horizon League matchup, limiting Oakland (7-7, 5-2 HL) to a season-low 30% shooting percentage (21-of-69) and forcing 13 turnovers. To add, WSU blocked a season-high seven shots and added seven steals.
Offensively, Wright State dominated points in the paint, 30-20, but struggled by shooting 32% (19-of-58) from the field and an uncharacteristic 14% (3-of-21) from outside the arc. Meanwhile, the Golden Grizzlies held the edge in 3-pointers, drilling nine on 25 attempts (36%). Oakland also won the rebound battle, 47-39, including 15 on the offensive end.
The Raiders found themselves down 9-2 early on but bounced back with a 10-2 run, making the score 12-11 in favor of Wright State after one quarter of play. The Golden Grizzlies made just one basket in the final eight minutes of the period. Roberson provided a spark off the bench with four points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
The team's continued to go back-and-forth, as WSU maintained a narrow 19-18 edge with 7:11 to go in the second quarter following two free throws by Wright. The one-point edge was WSU's last of the game, as Oakland responded with three unanswered 3-pointers to go ahead 27-19 at the 4:20 minute mark. The Raiders remained in striking distance by halftime, trailing 30-24.
The Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 39-27 with 8:02 remaining in the third quarter following a 7-0 run. Wright State trailed by double-digits for the rest of the game.
The Raiders continue their road slate on Saturday, January 15, at Detroit Mercy. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Calihan Hall.
