Third-quarter surge leads to Raider win at Detroit Mercy

DETROIT, Mich. — The Wright State women's basketball team collected its first Horizon League victory in the Kari Hoffman era, taking down Detroit Mercy 72-56 on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

WSU (2-12, 1-8 HL) featured a balanced offensive attack, as four Raiders scored in double figures. Edecia Beck led the charge with career-high marks in points (16), rebounds (9), and assists (5). Jada Roberson tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Jada Wright stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Destyne Jackson chipped in 15 points, good for her ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season.

As a team, Wright State dished out a season-best 20 assists, its most in a game since the 2019-20 season against Youngstown State (1/4/20). Six different Raiders recorded three or more assists in the win.

WSU shot 43-percent (12-of-28) from outside the arc, including 57% (8-of-14) in the second half. Beck and Jackson each knocked down a team-best three 3-pointers. Makira Webster paced the Raiders from deep in the opening period with a pair of shots from downtown.

On defense, Wright State forced the winless Titans (0-16, 0-9 HL) to 31% shooting (21-of-67) and 17 turnovers. To add, the Raiders had 11 steals, which was their second-highest season mark.

WSU trailed 27-25 at halftime but broke the game open by outscoring UDM 28-10 in the third quarter, resulting in a 53-37 advantage. The Raiders caught fire from the floor, shooting 11-of-19 from the field and 6-of-9 from deep. Meanwhile, Detroit Mercy could only muster four field goals while also turning the ball over nine times. WSU turned those nine turnovers into 12 points.

In the fourth quarter, UDM cut its deficit to 59-50 with 4:50 to go following a 5-0 run. However, Wright State withheld the late charge, closing the game on an 8-0 scoring spurt to clinch a 72-56 road win.

The Raiders will close their three-game road trip at Northern Kentucky on Thursday, January 20. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
