
Women’s Basketball to face Northern Kentucky in home-and-home series

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team will face a nearby conference foe in Northern Kentucky twice over a four-day stretch in a home-and-home series. The Raiders will travel to Highland Heights, Ky., for a 7 p.m. meeting at NKU on Thursday, January 20, before hosting the Norse on Saturday, January 22 at 4 p.m. Both games will televise on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State closed its weekend trip at Detroit Mercy on Saturday, January 15. After trailing 27-25 at halftime, WSU outscored the winless Titans 28-10 in the third quarter, resulting in a 53-37 advantage. The third-quarter surge proved to be the difference-maker, as the Raiders secured a 72-56 victory over UDM for their first Horizon League win of the 2021-22 season.
BALL DISTRIBUTION
WSU recorded a season-best 20 assists against Detroit Mercy, its most since the 2019-20 season against Youngstown State (1/4/20). Six different Raiders recorded three or more assists in the win, paced by Edecia Beck with a team-leading five.
STARTING FIVE
WSU's starting lineup of Beck, Jada Roberson, Destyne Jackson, Jada Wright, and Channing Chappell accounted for 89-percent of the team's offensive output at UDM with 64 points. Four starters scored in double figures, as Beck and Roberson led the way with a game-high 16 points apiece.
CAREER WEEKEND
Beck enjoyed a career weekend for the Raiders, as the fourth-year player surpassed career-high marks in several categories. Over two games, she averaged 14.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals. Beck blocked a career-best two shots and added 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals against Oakland (1/13). Just two days later, at UDM, she recorded career-high marks in points (16), rebounds (9), assists (5), and 3-pointers (3), while also adding two steals.
SCOUTING THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky is 11-3 overall, and 5-2 in Horizon League play. The Norse, who sit second in the conference standings, pushed their win streak to seven games by defeating a pair of Michigan opponents in Detroit Mercy (74-54) and Oakland (79-67) last weekend.
Lindsey Duvall averages 19.4 points per game in 14 starts, which ranks 25th nationally and second in the HL. Grayson Rose has paced the defense with conference-best marks in rebounds per game (10.1) and blocks per game (2.85). As a team, the Norse lead the HL in blocked shots with 54.
INSIDE THE WSU-NKU SERIES
WSU leads the all-time series 15-12. NKU held the edge at the start of the series, going 12-1 against the Raiders from 1982 to 1987. However, following a 25-year hiatus, WSU has won 14 in a row over NKU. The program's last squared off in the 2021 Horizon League Championship quarterfinals, where Wright State topped the Norse, 74-56. Jada Wright had one of her strongest outings of the season with seven points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.
RIM PROTECTOR
Wright ranks 51st nationally and third in the Horizon League in blocks per game (1.78). The Chicago native has totaled multiple blocks in five games, including a career-high four stuffs at Oakland. Wright has increased her average to 2.0 blocks per game in conference-only games.
JADA THE MENACE
Roberson is averaging 2.60 steals per game, ranking 40th in the country and second in the HL. She has recorded multiple steals in eight games, including her last five. Roberson tallied a career-high five steals in WSU's conference opener at Milwaukee (11/18).
HEATING UP AT THE RIGHT TIME
Over Roberson's last seven games, she has averaged a team-high 14.6 points on 46.1% shooting (41-of-89) to go along with 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.1 steals. In the span, the Muskegon, Mich., native has achieved single-game career highs in points (20 at Dayton), assists (7 vs. Lake Erie), and blocks (2 at Dayton).
FINDING A GROOVE
Wright has averaged a double-double with 11.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in her last four games. The junior college transfer has reached double figures in scoring and rebounding three times in the span. Wright tallied 14 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks against Lake Erie and followed the impressive performance with 13 points, seven rebounds, and one block at IUPUI. After 10 rebounds and four blocks at Oakland, she posted a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks against Detroit Mercy.
SHOOTERS SHOOT
Chappell leads the Raiders in 3-point shooting (37.3%) and ranks eighth in the conference in 3-point field goals per game (1.90). The second-year guard has made one or more threes in seven-straight games, dating back to November 20 at Green Bay.
JACKSON STEPPING UP
Jackson has turned in double-digit scoring performances in nine out of Wright State's 10 contests to date. She averages a team-leading 13.6 points per game, good for the ninth-best mark among conference players. The Lexington, Ky., native played in all 27 contests with 14 starts as a freshman, averaged 4.3 points per game last season with only three double-digit scoring games. Jackson is shooting 34% through 10 games, an increase from her 30% shooting mark from last season while increasing her minutes per game from 25.2 to 32.8 to start this season.
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK
This season, the Raiders have committed 156 turnovers, the third-lowest amount of 348 Division I programs. Against Lake Erie, WSU had a season-low ten turnovers, including just two in the first half.
WIN NO. 1
Wright State rolled past Division II Lake Erie 91-60 in front of over 2,700 fans on Education Day inside the Nutter Center. The win marked head coach Kari Hoffman's first victory at the helm of the Raiders. WSU raced out to a 33-10 lead after the first quarter and extended its edge to 52-21 by halftime. In the third quarter, the Raiders grew their advantage to 71-33 to put the game entirely out of reach, coasting to a 91-60 finish.
BACK IN A BIG WAY
Despite a three-week absence from play, a trio of Raiders achieved career-high marks in multiple categories against Lake Erie. White led the way with a career-best 20 points and 13 rebounds to go along with two steals and one block. Wright posted her first double-double at WSU with 14 points and 15 rebounds – both career-highs. Meanwhile, Roberson finished with career-best marks in points (19) and assists (7). Jackson added a career-high 18 points.
HOT FROM DEEP
Wright State went 14-of-25 (.560) from deep versus Lake Erie, as four different Raiders made three or more 3-pointers. Chappell converted on a game-leading four 3-pointers, followed by Jackson, White, and Roberson knocking down three apiece. The last time WSU made 14 or more threes in a game transpired during the 2018-19 season against Kentucky State (12/13/18). The Raiders last shot above 56-percent from 3-point range in 2017 at Belmont (12/18/17), going 9-for-12 from deep.
TOUGH LUCK
