DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team's late comeback was not enough, as the Raiders fell 82-79 to Northern Kentucky on Saturday evening inside the Nutter Center.
The visiting Norse (13-3, 7-2) comfortably led 78-69 at the 3:40 minute mark of the fourth quarter, but WSU (2-14, 1-10 HL) reduced its deficit to 80-79 following a contested layup by Channing Chappell with 12 seconds remaining. NKU made two free throws to extend its edge to 82-79 with six seconds left, and Jada Roberson's potential game-tying 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer.
Destyne Jackson led the Raiders with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while Edecia Beck tallied her first collegiate double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. Roberson helped out with 17 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Diamond Stokes stepped up in the absence of Jada Wright by grabbing nine rebounds and adding six points.
Wright State won the rebound battle 42-to-37, including 16 on the offensive end. Roberson was responsible for six offensive rebounds, while Beck had four of her own. The Raiders also used their length to block six shots compared to one by the Norse. The frontcourt advantage led to WSU totaling 48 points in the paint.
In shooting, Northern Kentucky held a slight edge by going 44-percent (30-of-67) from the floor and 53% (9-of-17) from deep. WSU finished with a 43% shooting percentage (30-of-69) but went just 25% (4-of-16) on 3-point attempts.
Both squads were efficient at the free throw line, as WSU went 15-of-18 (83%) compared to a 13-of-17 (76%) clip for NKU.
Wright State and Northern Kentucky exchanged leads in the opening half, as the Raiders were on top 23-22 following a fast break layup by Jackson at the 8:26 minute mark of the second quarter. However, NKU outscored the Raiders 27-11 for the remainder of the quarter to enter the break in front 50-38.
The Norse widened their edge to 55-40 with 8:13 left in the third quarter, which marked the game's largest lead. The Raiders used a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 64-57 with 41 seconds remaining in the quarter.
WSU continued to inch away in the final period, as Jackson's ninth field goal of the game reduced the Raider deficit to 71-68 at the 5:41 minute mark. NKU answered back with an 8-1 run, bringing the score to 78-69 in favor of the Norse.
Trailing 80-74, Wright State scored five unanswered points off a three-point play by Roberson and a layup by Chappell, which brought them within one point, 80-79, with just 12 seconds left. However, the Raiders were held scoreless in their final possession, resulting in an 82-79 loss.
WSU will continue its homestand on Thursday, January 27, versus Green Bay. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Nutter Center.Â
