Men's Soccer battles to a draw in Cleveland

CLEVELAND – The Wright State men's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit for an important point in the standings with a 2-2 draw at Cleveland State Saturday night.

The draw leaves Wright State (4-6-5, 4-1-3 Horizon) two points back of League-leading Cleveland State (9-3-4, 5-1-2 Horizon) entering Wednesday's final regular season match. The Vikings sit in first place with 17 points with the Raiders in a tie for second with IUPUI at 15 points. Detroit Mercy and Oakland are three points behind at 12 points entering Wednesday.

Wright State will host Detroit Mercy at Alumni Field (2 p.m. start), while Cleveland State hosts Green Bay, IUPUI is at Robert Morris and Oakland hosts Northern Kentucky.

On Saturday night, the Raiders fell behind early thanks to a pair of Cleveland State penalty kick goals by Albert Portas in the 25th and 40th minutes. Wright State responded though, using a turnover at midfield to create an odd-man rush in the 43rd minute that Reece Allbaugh buried off the tough angle via a through ball from Cole Werthmuller.

The Raiders picked up the offensive intensity early in the second half and were ultimately rewarded when Joe Kouadio settled a bouncing ball and tucked a rocket just inside the top right corner from the top of the box in the 60th minute to knot the score. Neither side had many quality chances in the final 30 minutes as they played out to the draw.

Cleveland State had a 14-10 overall shot advantage with a 6-4 mark in shots on goal while tallying a 10-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Allbaugh and Kouadio each had three shots for the Raiders while Jannis Schmidt and Bojan Kolevski each had four shots to pace Cleveland State.

Raider keeper Guilherme Pipolo turned away four saves, including three in the first half to keep Wright State within striking distance before its comeback.

Chippy throughout, 29 total fouls were whistled, including 23 on the Raiders, while Wright State drew six of the seven yellow cards.
