DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team came back to win the final two sets on Tuesday night for a five-set victory over Northern Kentucky as the Raiders won their 17th consecutive game to set a new program record.
Wright State (22-3, 14-0 Horizon) remained undefeated in Horizon League play while setting the new winning streak mark, surpassing the previous record of 16 that had been done by the 1985 and 2019 squads. The Raiders are now three games ahead of Northern Kentucky (13-12, 11-3 Horizon) in the HL standings, with Green Bay just behind with an 11-4 HL mark with two weekends of play remaining.
On Tuesday, the Raiders were led by
Megan Alders and
Taylor Bransfield, who each finished with a match-high 16 kills, while receiving double-doubles from
Callie Martin (12 kills, 17 digs) and
Katie Meyer (50 assists, 21 digs).
Sam Ott just missed a double-double of her own, tallying nine kills with 16 digs.
Jenna Story collected 20 digs while adding three service aces.
Making her second start of the season, Meyer has recorded assist totals of 50 (Tuesday) and 52, her career-best, from back on September 3 in a win over Indiana State. Her 21 digs notched a new career high as well.
SET ONE
A set of runs for both sides, Wright State tallied a 8-2 run in the middle of the set to take a 17-14 lead, only to see NKU respond with a 7-3 run if its own to regain the advantage at 21-20. Back-to-back NKU errors pushed the Raiders ahead at 22-21, and after a momentary pause at 22-all, the Raiders recorded three of the final four points behind kills from
Aaliyah Byers and Ott and a service ace from Meyer.
SET TWO
Northern Kentucky rolled off eight of the first 10 points and later led 14-5 as Wright State was forced to battle from behind the entire set. The Raiders were never able to string together more than two consecutive points as the teams traded points to the end of the set.
SET THREE
Back-and-forth for the majority of the set, each side had small spurts of two to three points before Northern Kentucky used a five-point run to take control of the set. The Raiders late push was not enough as the visitors took the 2-1 lead.
SET FOUR
Wright State came out with five of the first six points to jump ahead, only to have NKU pull back into the set with a 5-1 run of its own to tie the score at 13-13. A 7-4 scoring run for the Raiders was just enough to give them some breathing room thanks to kills from Alders, Bransfield and Ott, as Wright State closed the set with five of the final seven points behind kills from the same trio before a service ace from Martin forced the deciding set.
SET FIVE
The Raiders carried their fourth set momentum into the fifth, tallying five of the first seven points behind a pair of kills from Martin and a Story service ace. After NKU pulled back to within three at 11-8, Wright State closed the night with four of the final five points thanks for a pair of kills from Martin and a final swing from Bransfield.
