DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program took down Detroit Mercy 71-67 on Thursday evening inside the Nutter Center.
The Raiders (4-21, 3-17 HL) featured a balanced offensive attack, as five players scored in double figures, led by
Jada Roberson with 16 points.
Jada Wright and
Channing Chappell had 13 points apiece, while
KK White totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, and a team-leading five assists.
Diamond Stokes shot an efficient 5-of-8 from the field en route to 11 points.
WSU forced 17 turnovers in the victory, including seven in the first two minutes of the Horizon League contest. Roberson tallied a game-leading four steals, all in the first quarter, in the defensive effort. Chappell and White chipped in with two steals each.
While both teams shot 42-percent from the field, the Raiders held the edge in 3-point shooting with a 6-of-17 (35%) clip.
Makira Webster, Chappell, and White netted two 3-pointers apiece.
Detroit Mercy (1-27, 1-20 HL) won the rebound battle 46-31, which included 16 on the offensive end. For WSU, Roberson finished with a team-best nine rebounds. Wright was close behind with eight boards.
The Raiders opened the game on a 16-4 run and led 21-10 by the end of the first quarter. The Titans totaled the same amount of turnovers (11) and shot attempts (11) in the period. Stokes got off to a hot start, scoring six points on 3-of-3 shooting.
WSU continued to hold the momentum, as a second-chance layup by Wright extended its edge to 25-12 with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Raiders kept their double-digit point advantage in check, leading 38-26 entering halftime.
Wright State totaled 13 points off turnovers in the half, compared to just one for UDM. Six different Raiders scored five or more points in the period, highlighted by Stokes' 10 points.
A 3-pointer by White increased the Raiders' lead to 48-32 at the 6:26 minute mark of the third quarter. However, UDM closed the period on a 10-0 run to close their deficit to 53-48.
Two free throws got the Titans within one possession, 54-52, with eight minutes to go in the final period. The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, with Wright State managing to stay in front. A late 4-0 run gave the Raiders a 68-62 lead with 19 seconds to go, which Detroit Mercy could not overcome.
In the second half, Roberson was at her best with 10 points, six rebounds, and one block. Chappell was second on the team with eight points in the period.
WSU will wrap up its regular season by hosting Oakland on Saturday, February 26, at 2 p.m. The Raiders will celebrate the senior trio of
Jenasae Bishop, White, and Wright during the pregame portion of Saturday's contest.
