Raiders drop tough battle to Oakland on Senior Day

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball team closed its regular season with a 51-40 loss to Oakland on Saturday afternoon inside the Nutter Center.Â
WSU celebrated its three seniors in Jenasae Bishop, KK White, and Jada Wright before tip-off.Â
White led the Raiders (4-22, 3-18 HL) with a team-leading 13 points to go along with five rebounds and one steal. Wright had an all-around performance with seven points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Makira Webster shot 2-of-5 from 3-point range en route to six points, while Channing Chappell dished out a team-high three assists.Â
Wright State struggled from the field, shooting 26-percent (16-of-61) overall and 16% (3-of-19) from deep. However, the Raider defense kept the conference finale close by limiting OU (13-14, 11-9 HL) to a 30% (19-of-62) shooting clip and 25% (5-of-20) mark on 3-point attempts.Â
WSU forced 14 turnovers on the day, including four by way of steal. The Raiders also tallied five blocks, paced by Wright's game-leading four stuffs. The Golden Grizzlies held a 53-to-38 advantage in rebounding, which included 13 on the offensive end.Â
Trailing 14-4 in the first quarter, the Raiders answered back with a 17-2 run spanning over seven minutes to capture a 21-16 lead with 5:06 left in the opening half. Oakland closed the half with an 8-0 scoring spurt to enter halftime in front 24-21.Â
In total, the first half featured four ties and three lead changes. Wright provided a defensive spark in the second quarter with five rebounds and two blocks. Jada Roberson scored a team-best four points on two field goals in the period. However, she finished the game 3-of-20 from the field.Â
After the third quarter, OU maintained a three-point edge, 35-32, as both teams netted 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The Golden Grizzlies made consecutive 3-pointers to open the final period, extending their lead to 41-32. A layup by Wright reduced WSU's deficit to 45-50, but the Raiders could not get any closer, resulting in a 51-40 loss.Â
White scored eight of her 13 points in the second half on 3-of-6 shooting. She was the lone WSU individual to convert on more than one field goal in the period. Â
The Raiders earned the No. 10 seed for 2022 Horizon League Championship. Wright State will open the tournament at No. 7 seed Oakland on Tuesday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. The tournament game will air on ESPN+.Â
