Raiders swept at No. 3 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Wright State baseball program dropped a pair of games to No. 3 Oklahoma State on Sunday at O'Brate Stadium. The Raiders endured a 26-3 loss in game one, followed by a 7-6 heartbreaker in 10 innings.

Wright State fell to 0-5 on the season, while OSU improved to 4-2 overall.

Game 1 - Wright State 3, Oklahoma State 26

Oklahoma State exploded for 26 runs on 23 hits in the Sunday opener, which included a nine-run first inning and a 12-run seventh inning.

The Raiders held the score in check for the next three innings after OSU plated nine runs on three hits, three walks, and three hit batters in the opening frame.

WSU reached the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, reducing its deficit to 9-3. Julian Greenwell got things going with an RBI double and came around to score later in the inning off a throwing error. Justin McConnell reached on an infield single and was brought home on a sac fly by Andrew Patrick

The Cowboys scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning and added three more runs in the sixth to cushion their lead to 14-3. Oklahoma State put the game out of reach with 12 runs on 10 hits and two walks in the seventh. The scoring spurt included six extra-base hits.

Six pitchers appeared in the game for Wright State. Sam Wirsing allowed just one earned run in 2.1 innings of work in relief while also striking out three batters. He pitched consecutive scoreless frames after entering the game in the third inning. Despite giving up just one hit, starting pitcher Aaron Ernst (0-1) was handed the loss after being tagged for seven runs in two-thirds of an inning. The right-hander struggled with his command, hitting three batters and walking another three.

Offensively, Greenwell reached base twice on a double and a hit by pitch. Gehrig Anglin, Luke Arnold, and McConnell added singles in the loss.

Game 2  - Wright State 6, Oklahoma State 7
Wright State led 6-2 with three outs to go in the Sunday finale, but the Cowboys scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 6-all.

The Raiders were close to retaking the lead in the top of the 10th inning, as Greenwell was tagged out at home attempting to score off a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the frame, OSU scored the winning run off a fielding error by Zane Harris

McConnell drove in a team-leading two runs in the loss, while Alec Sayre went 2-for-5 at the plate. Justin Riemer reached base three times on a bunt single and two walks. Harris added a solo home run in the second inning.

The Raiders displayed a patient approach at the plate with nine walks. Both Anglin and Greenwell drew three free passes. Defensively, WSU was errorless until OSU's final at-bat.

The Cowboys struck first with one run on a hit and two walks in the first inning. Harris tied the game in the next frame as he slugged his second home run of the season over the right-field wall.

The Raiders collected their first lead of the day in the fourth inning with two runs. After Sammy Sass led off the inning with a double, WSU's next two batters were retired on a strikeout and line out. However, Oklahoma State starting pitcher Bryce Osmond threw four-straight walks, resulting in Sass and Anglin scoring.

Wright State went on to add three insurance runs, pushing its advantage to 6-2. Riemer showed off his speed in the seventh inning with a bunt single and stolen base. Patrick singled through the left side to score Riemer from second. McConnell delivered an RBI single to score Harris with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Anglin, who walked earlier in the frame, reached home on a wild pitch for his second run of the game.

After allowing one run in the first inning, starting pitcher Jake Shirk composed himself by retiring 10-straight batters. OSU's Caiden Trenkle broke the impressive stretch with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Shirk lasted 4.2 innings on the day, allowing just two runs on three hits and two walks. He limited the Cowboys to no runs on two hits from the second inning on.

Sebastian Gongora arrived in relief for Shirk in the bottom of the fifth. In his first three innings of work, he held OSU scoreless while punching out six batters. The redshirt freshman fell into trouble in the bottom of the ninth, giving up a three-run homer, making the score 6-5 in favor of the Raiders.

Josh Laisure was tagged for the game-tying run later in the ninth inning. Tristan Haught received the decision after allowing an unearned run in the 10th frame.
