Women’s Basketball opens Horizon League Championship at No. 7 Oakland

DAYTON — The No. 10 seed Wright State women's basketball team opens the 2022 Horizon League Championship at No. 7 seed Oakland on Tuesday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. The postseason game will broadcast live at the Athletics Center O'rena on ESPN+.

TOURNAMENT FLASHBACK
A season ago, the Raiders captured their third Horizon League Championship title in program history by winning three games with an average margin of 13.7 points. WSU opened the tournament with a 74-56 win against Northern Kentucky before knocking off Cleveland State 73-62 in the semifinals. In the championship game, Wright State punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a 53-41 victory over IUPUI.
Jada Wright averaged 6.3 points on 52-percent shooting to go along with 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks over the three contests. Destyne Jackson added nine points, while Jada Roberson averaged 27.3 minutes per game in three starts.
HL BRACKET
The Raiders earned the No. 10 seed in the Horizon League Championship after finishing the regular season with a 3-18 mark against conference opponents. The bottom eight programs in the bracket will compete on March 1 in the opening round, hosted by the matchup's higher seed. The top-four seeded teams in IUPUI, Youngstown State, Green Bay, and Cleveland earned a bye to the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 3. The semifinals and championship will occur at Indiana Farmers Coliseum from March 7-8.
LAST TIME OUT
WSU wrapped up regular-season action inside the Nutter Center, highlighted by a 71-67 win over Detroit Mercy (2/24). Five Raiders scored in double figures in the victory, led by Roberson with 16 points. Wright and Channing Chappell had 13 points apiece, while KK White totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, and a team-leading five assists. Diamond Stokes shot an efficient 5-of-8 from the field en route to 11 points. Wright State followed with a 51-40 loss to Oakland (2/26) on Senior Day. White scored a team-high 13 points in the defeat.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Oakland earned the No. 7 seed in the Horizon League Championship after concluding the regular season with an 11-9 record in conference play. One of OU's biggest wins of the season transpired at Youngstown State, upsetting the Penguins 56-52.
Kahlaijah Dean headlines the Golden Grizzly returners, as the senior guard leads the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and steals per game (1.8). Another guard in Brianne Beatty has averaged 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in a team-high 26 starts.
INSIDE THE WSU-OU SERIES
The Raiders have controlled the all-time series versus Oakland with 18 wins in 22 meetings. In last year's 74-49 victory over the Golden Grizzlies, Roberson turned in her first collegiate double-double with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. WSU made history in its 80-75 win against OU during the 2017-18 season with school records in free throws makes (33) and free throw attempts (48).
Wright State finished on the losing end of both meetings against Oakland during the regular season. Makira Webster and Chappell were the only two Raiders to start both games against the Golden Grizzlies.
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOK
Jada Wright has totaled 44 blocks in 20 games, good for the fifth-most in single-season school history. She is two blocks away from surpassing '83 graduate Christi Hill into fourth in the record book. Richelle van Der Keijl currently holds the single-season block record, as she finished with 80 during the 2015-16 campaign.
MAKING HISTORY
In Wright State's 69-63 win against UIC (2/12), the Raiders scored 19 points off 30 turnovers, including 15 by way of steal. WSU had not reached feats in turnovers forced and steals in its last 162 games, which also came against the Flames on January 20, 2017.
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK
The Raiders have committed 309 turnovers this season, the ninth-lowest amount of 348 Division I programs. WSU also ranks second in the HL in turnovers per game (14.0). Against Youngstown State (2/20), WSU had a season-low seven turnovers, including just three in the first half.

She has recorded multiple steals 15 times, including 11 of her last 16 games. Roberson tallied a career-high five steals in WSU's conference opener against the Panthers (11/18).
NOT BAD FOR A GUARD
Roberson ranks second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. The rebounding average ranks ninth in the conference and second among HL guards. Her 2.8 offensive rebounds per game sit fourth in the Horizon League.

Over Roberson's last 19 games, she has averaged a team-best 14.4 points on 38.3% shooting (110-of-287) to go along with 6.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.2 steals. In the span, the Muskegon, Mich., native has achieved single-game career highs in points (27 at RMU), assists (7 vs. Lake Erie), and blocks (2 at Dayton).
